Rivers was at no time in the same stratosphere as brees. Played in a shite division with top talent at every skill position.

so how did the Chargers go from 9-7 with Bress to 14-2 with Rivers the very next year with the same players

Brees, was skyrocketing in terms of performance at the time he left SD, SD went through all the rough times and the Saints reaped the rewards. Not TO mention, the AFC west was a good division in brees' time there. It was the worst in the league after he left.

No doubt SP is a top playcaller but Marty was no slouch either. Just a different philosophy.

This.

They never had the x-factor on their side... they were always missing glue guys to surround their elite players.

I agree with all that, I'm just saying that when he left is when he blossomed. If he went back now yea he'd be awesome still, but would he have ever become the QB he is if he'd stayed? Who knows

The only difference in the division was that San Diego got better when Brees left

What happened to him?

Fell apart from egregious steroid use. But nonetheless, he was one of the best pass rushers when he played

This is some hindsight shite. Hell Brees was on the verge of being labeled a bust until he had his breakout season in '04. There was a reason why the Chargers drafted Phillip Rivers. Brees had a nice year in '05 but it's not like he was the same player he eventually developed into with the Saints and Payton.

Rivers was a legit top 5-7 QB for several years up until recently. Even this past year for him which everyone thought was so terrible was statistically better than Brees last year with the Chargers.

It has to suck as a chargers fan. No doubt in my mind that San Diego goes all the way in 06 with brees under center

No doubt in my mind Marty never gets fired and the nucleus of Marty, LT, and Breesus win AT LEAST 2 SBs.

Brees was awesome before he was let go. Period. He was trending upwards. I'm not saying they're stupid for making the decision, but had they decided to keep him, the result IMO would have been Super BowlS

They were already trending that way. Rivers did a great job not fricking it up, but brees was, is and always will be the better QB. A rookie took a team to 14-2. What would 2006 brees have done?

The same players? Marcus McNeil, shawn steroid, and a blossoming VJ think you're fricking retarded.

22 people. No team is the same from one year to the next.

People were sucking AJ Smiths cock that year for drafting McNeil and merrimann. Both were impact players from day 1 at 2 of the 3 most important positions. DOPE

Vincent Jackson played only his rookie year with Brees. What a stupid, stupid argument.

I can't even believe I would have to explain this to anyone.

The way they treated Schottenheimer, they don't deserve to win anything ever.

Both Merriman and Jackson were on the team with Brees when they went 9-7. Don't tell me you think Marcus McNeil is worth 5 wins

yep. The chargers were going to keep Brees and trade Rivers, but then Brees got hurt in the final game of the season (greatest day in saints history ) making it easier for the chargers to decide on keeping Rivers.

Merrimann played one year, his rookie year with brees. You understand players get better, and with VJ that was certainly the case. Yes, a top LT on a team structured like that is worth quite a bit. He was a pro bowl LT in his rookie season. NTM, it's not like Drew wouldn't have improved. Keep tarding it up. You had to look all that up, I remember it. You trapped yourself with you'r own stupidity just assuming 9-7 to 14-2 was all rivers. Just admit that it was a better team.

I don't even need to defend it. Drew is going to the hall. Rivers is barely an average QB.

Their window seemed to close really fast. I think it started with hiring Norv. Without looking back at team stats they had a good balance on both sides for 2 or 3 years, LT was not brought back, then the defense seemed to regress. So once again they have balance, just not a successful one.

I just don't see them turning it around in another 2-3 years before Rivers should drop off (since he's 31 now). Gates is 33. Mathews is garbage.
