quote:

BOSTON -- Hacker Barnaby Jack has died in San Francisco, a week before he was due to show off techniques for attacking implanted heart devices that he said could kill a man from 30 feet away.

It was not immediately clear what had happened. The San Francisco Medical Examiner's office said that Jack had died in the city on Thursday, but declined to elaborate.

According to the Black Hat website, Jack was to present Aug. 3-4 on "Hacking into Humans." " I will discuss how these devices operate and communicate and the security shortcomings of the current protocols. Our internal research software will be revealed that utilizes a common bedside transmitter to scan for, and interrogate individual medical implants," according to promotional material for the event.

According to his bio, Barnaby Jack is the director Of embedded security research at IOActive.

In 2010, Jack gained attention for hacking two different automated teller machines at the Black Hat conference.

This years Black Hat conference starts tomorrow in Las Vegas.

I don't disagree that this couldn't be used to assassinate someone of importance. It is one of the reasons those types hide their medical records. Hell, we don't let people get the president's poo.

This guy wasn't going around killing people. He was showing that there's a security issue that makes it possible unless measures are taken to close the vulnerability. He was one of the good guys. Somebody didn't want him publicizing this, and they killed him.

So yeah, you should be upset.
