Would you watch a sports broadcast with no announcers?

Some of you may remember this, but many years ago HBO used to show live Wimbledon coverage in the early rounds. I have no clue why, but it had to be back during the Conners-McEnroe-Endberg-Becker type era.

Anyway, this one time the HBO crew decided to cut to the British announcers for a whole game to show you what they were saying. The thing was, they said almost nothing as I recall. The occasional, "Excellent volley," or something, but even during dead periods they didn't say a word. It was sort of like being there, but with better seats and multiple viewing angles.

To this day, when I'm not at a live sporting event and I'm forced to watch on TV I wish for one of those SAP buttons on my TV, but to silence just the announcers and keep the crowd noise. Most of the time, they're talking to hear themselves talk and saying things that most fans who would be watching the game already know. The only time any of that becomes relevant is if there's an injury, or during some hugely watched game by people who otherwise don't follow the sport often...like the Super Bowl.

So...if you could turn off the announcers and just watch the game at home with crowd noise only...would you? Or do you enjoy listening to most announcers call games?

NBC or someone did this for a season or two way back and it was awful. As bad as announcers can be its weird as shite to just watch a game in complete silence. Especially a sport like football where the actual action is only 5% of tv time

It would be cool to have that option and easy for sports networks to have that options

"Oh Dierdorf is commentating? Nahh ill just listen to the crowd"

I watch Braves games on mute all the time.

But if it's two teams I don't really care about than I'd rather have announcers. Are they annoying sometimes? Sure. But they can roll out quick stats and info about the game

I'd love it! haha I think it would make it much more like being there live, which is what I prefer in the first place.

At least I'd love being able to turn it off and turn it back on if something happens that some sideline reporter can tell me about. Sort of like having that buddy next to you in the stands that wears a radio earpiece and gets tidbits on injuries while at the game.

Otherwise, I have no interest in hearing a bunch of personal interest crap about most players. If they are players I'm interested in, I almost certainly know it already.

I watch most games on mute. Most announcers are awful and I especially dont like those who feel the need to fill every bit of silence with dumb annoying jibber jabber. The Thursday night college football games are especially bad with 3 guys in the booth.

Yeah...I don't mean mute. With mute you get silence. I mean no voice overs...just natural crowd noise.

I can see that, but the truth is I've gotten to the point that I no longer watch games involving teams I don't care about.

definitely...especially if the crowd noise is brought up to normal like levels. With the improving HD camera angles it really would be like being at the game.

Watching the Open with the British Feed wasnt noticeably better than the American one.

I need to find out who that main announcer was because he was horrible. Support guy was good though.

That's what I'm imagining.

I'm not talking about the golden age of sports broadcasters who actually brought something to the game...I'm talking about the majority of the guys they trot out to call the metric shite-ton of games they now broadcast that usually consist of one broadcast guy you've never heard if and an ex-player who think you might remember.

No thanks...

Slightly off topic: I'd rather not listen to an LSU game than listen to a Hawthorne radio broadcast.

The British may very well have come our direction over the years since that HBO thing I referenced. It was striking how different it was at the time. It was as if their sound had ben cut off, but not the sound of the court. Except, every now and then you'd hear them say, "Nice shot."

I think they only did it for a game, and it was horrible. NFL game between Jets and Dolphins

No that would be terrible. Broadcasters don't get enough respect...mike tirico, I'm looking at you.

I'm curious why you think that. Do you enjoy going to live games? Do you feel less connected to the game by not having the guy next to you describe what's going on in front of you and filling in most of the rest of the time with explanations of what you just watched?

I'm genuinely interested in why it would be bad. I can actually understand what some would like about announcers...but I'm not seeing how it would make watching it bad. To me, it would be as much like being there as possible...and I love that.

Not even the same experience. A live sporting event is something like watching a play, you are in a sense a participant. Plus dont think that a live NFL game is any less of a production

On TV, the announcers' responsibility is to connect you to this event as if you're there. This is my shortest answer, I could sperg out for 3 hours on this topic
