There is no end in sight for Game of Thrones and True Blood, HBO’s top programming exec maintained to reporters Thursday at the Television Critics Assoc. summer press tour in Beverly Hills.
“It can go on as long as there are stories to tell,” network president Michael Lombardo said of Thrones‘ future.

Unrelated, but of interest to me, Hunted is coming back on Cinemax as some sort of spin-off

At first I thought he said Theon's future.

As long as they stay close to the books, I don't see how it could get bad

I thought they said it was only running 7 seasons?

There's plenty of material to last a good few seasons even without what hasn't been published. It has to be making them a shite ton of money right now with as popular as it's become.

I think that was an offhand comment.

What happens when the show catches up to the books?

I honestly don't think it will. You have at least half a season of Book 3 left. Then both books 4 and 5 are long enough to be split. That's about 5 more years give or take if they push the show that far. And it's already been 2 years since the last book was published.
ETA: And then as said you have the Dunk and Egg novellas too.

To be fair, he gave the most politically correct committing non-committal: "as long as there's a story"

Oh, my sweet summer reader! What do you know about waiting for GRRM? Waiting is for the Winds of Winter, when the delays fall a hundred pages deep; waiting is for the Dance of Dragons, when the sun hides for years and children are born and live and die all in darkness. That is the time for waiting, my little Belle.

You know nothing PsychTiger.

I suspect 9 seasons will be necessary

This makes my day honestly.

Dunk and Egg
I think these would be best served as movies.

I think it would be funny if the series runs out of material, there's still another book pending, there's a lull, and then its financially impossible to bring back the cast for the final season. Because at that point the cast would have HBO over a barrel

Funny tragic not funny ha ha.

I was thinking they could pad it with "Robert's Rebellion". There's a ton of things that have been well brought up by this point in the book, but are either not mentioned or completely glossed over by the television series.
