Google Chromecast - Streaming TV Game changer?

Google Chromecast

Thing is only $35! INSANE!!

Sit back, watch together

With Chromecast, you can easily enjoy your favorite online entertainment on your HDTV—movies, TV shows, music, and more from Netflix, YouTube, Google Play, and Chrome. No more huddling around small screens and tiny speakers. Chromecast automatically updates to work with a growing number of apps.

Remote free

Chromecast works with devices you already own, including Android tablets and smartphones, iPhones®, iPads®, Chrome for Mac® and Chrome for Windows®. Browse for what to watch, control playback, and adjust volume using your device. You won't have to learn anything new.

Plug in and play

Get started in 3 easy steps: plug Chromecast into any HDTV, connect it to WiFi, then send videos and more from your smartphone, tablet or laptop to your TV with the press of a button

Tip: Chromecast Can Cast Your Entire Desktop Screen Too, Not Just Tabs

Why Chromecast may be Google's TV game-changer - CNN

Why Chromecast is such a big deal for Google - USA Today

Google unveils Chromecast for TV video streaming - video - The Guardian

"Google showcases their new TV streaming gadget called Chromecast on Wednesday. Mario Queiroz, vice president of product management, explains how the device allows users to watch content from their smartphones, tablets or laptops on their TV, using an HDMI input. Google say Chromecast will work on both Android and Apple iOS devices and will be available for $35 (£23)"

That video

So basically you can watch anything and everything on it.. similar to OnLive or Roku, it cost $35.. and sold out in the first 2 hours of it being up on every single site that was selling it.

Good job Google, Good job.

Right now the apps have this a bit limited but it's still great for the price. As the apps expand it will get even better. Ill probably end up with one

Not yet, but potentially, yes.
I tried to get one from Best Buy today, but all the stores in the surrounding Austin area were sold out before I could get there.

While that is true, it's also a sling box for any device you have chrome on as well.. and you sling ANYTHING from chrome over to it, that's pretty awesome for a device you wont even realize is on your TV because it's so small..

Also in the work environment - I can now take my chromecast with me on business with my projector and always just push my content from my laptop to the projector without having to connect a single thing.. or even be in the same room.

Will wait for a review to properly explain what the device can do. Google was too vague in their presentation of the features

Yes.

It is like the missing link.

I was going to make a thread about this yesterday and forgot. For $35 I'll get one and try it out. Don't need any reviews or anything to try something that cheap out.

Definite game changer.

I see that the app list is only Netflix, YouTube, Google Play, and Chrome.

If I wanted to put something from, say, justin.tv or Amazon Instant Video up on my tv, it'd work without needing future updates as long as I was using Chrome to watch them right?

My bold prediction: Chromecast will kill Roku eventually.

Chromecast + Apple TV = Best of both Apple and Google ecosystems. No need to be tied to only Android or only iPhones anymore....you can have a mixture is devices in the same household.

Not sure how Cheomecast will be useful in a work environment. All you can push at this time is your web browser and videos. Unless you can mirror your entire laptop screen, show PowerPoint slides etc., I see limited utility for Chromcast in the work place.

completely agree.

Also, it sucks that Chrome+Netflix is about to end. Due to demand.

Not a game changer if you can't mirror your screen

Do you think somebody will hack it for that capability? If so, I will be

It's not as great as it seems.

1. It's not just a USB that you plug in your TV and go, it has to be plugged into the wall.

2. You have to have a device streaming whatever you want to watch. A Roku is only $15 more and the apps are self contained.

I'm thinking a lot of people are going to be disappointed with what they're actually getting.....but for the price I guess you can't bitch too much

I guess I dont understand what this actually is. I can't play something on my computer and just have it show up on my tv, like mirroring screens I guess?
