Have you looked at the circuit board for the furnace? See if it has a diagnostic LED. Check fuses on the board, look for burnt traces, etc.

Is it a furnace, gas heat? If so, turn the thermo to "on", open side of unit and if possible try and "carefully" spin the squirrel cage. If it starts turning I'd think it's the capacitor. Just a guess.
Use a long screwdriver for the spinning part.

Same thing happened to mine last summer. I like to fix things myself and youtube'd it and replaced the capacitor and it was fixed!

Grand total...$60.00

Sounds like either the capacitor or the connections to the capacitor have burned out. Parts really aren't too expensive. Maybe $50 at most. Labor is going to get you for between $250-$500 though
That's the most common problem, especially if the unit has some age on it. Also, blown capacitors are often the sign of other problems, like low coolant, which stresses the motor.

If you have a multi-tester you can figure out where the break is. Word of advice, though - make sure you ground that capacitor before you touch it. If it's not the problem and still has a charge, it will hurt like a mutha.

He probably thinks they're cooler than where he's at now.

Make sure the door to the attic unit is on properly.. There is a plunger switch that will shut the entire unit down if the access door is just slightly open.
It may vibrate loose from time to time..

Yep. Usually call my dad, but I've seen the capacitor replaced enough times to figure that one out.

ETA: LOL - I see what you're saying...I was assuming he pulled the disconnect before grounding the capacitor. It would smart if you didn't do that.

I had a similar problem 2 weeks ago, shut off out of nowhere. Ended up being the capacitor (3rd consecutive summer it has gone out). You can jump the wires to the other capacitor to get it running but I cannot remember the configuration. Cost me $115 to get fixed.
