K. So I been thinking about about making this thread for a while. I saw a few threads on how cinemark is dropping the ball but it was over the July 4th weekend and some understood but then I saw the comment that AMC was the best thing that happened to BR theaters. I understand that's that persons perspective and opinion but here is mine: AMC has completely let the former Rave theaters go to shite.

I notice that movies no longer start when they are "scheduled" to. They now have to play that obligatory promotional shite which pushes the "start" of the movie back about 5 minutes. Why not really change a 10:30 showtime to 10:35? I know that's a nit pick but it's an observation.

On one occasion a buddy and I went to go see Oblivion. It started 5 minutes late which I'm used now but when the previews started playing something wasn't right. It was a preview for a kids animated movie followed by 4 more. Then the croods started to play. Not oblivion. We walked out got an attendant and notified them and they said they'd play the right movie, which they did but that didn't stop half the people from walking away or demanding a refund right there on the spot. They said to see them afterwards for a free pass. After the movie we went out and nope no free pass. We then spoke to a manager and got what they said they'd compensate us for.

When I saw sky fall last year in its opening week at the rave near the mall, the movie was about to start but a manager walked in and said they apologize about the delay and that it will start shortly but to meet them afterwards for a free pass. I didn't even know we were behind schedule. Sure enough after a great movie they were right outside our exit handing out free passes.

Then tonight, my brother and I went to go see The Conjuring. We arrived 20 minutes before show time but they hadn't even cleaned up the last screening. The promotional shite was playing but pop corn, drinks, twizzler bags everywhere. One high school kid thought it was a novel idea to eat free stale popcorn from the bags on the floor. We went to the top and had to clean our own spots, but when we saw the dip cup we had to concede that spot. Movie was good but service was terrible. I know someone had to complain because one employee walked in and started cleaning then 4 more ran in with brooms and trashcans.

/rant

Tl;dr CSB
Never knew how good rave was until it changed hands over to AMC.

Anyone else agree? Disagree? Rave or AMC horror stories?

I did notice this last week when I went to see Pacific Rim. It wasn't a big deal but it was annoying

I haven't noticed any other problems with amc

Y'all are seriously upset over 5 fricking minutes?

If this seriously bothers you then just don't go to the movies. I can't imagine how horrible you make your lives out to be if this is such a big deal

Same thing happened years ago when AMC bought out the Palace theaters in NOLA. Rave was definitely a cut above.

I don't mind it so much anymore. AMC finally put a little money into the one in Hammond a few years ago to bring it up to par. The Moviewatcher club is worth every bit of the $12 a year they charge you.

Probably do that to get more butts in the seat to watch the advertising. If they put 10:35 then they'd have less people to watch that stuff. Heck, I remember when people would go to the theaters to watch movies without advertising.

So true. I had a summer job at the original Elmwood location. The Palace was awesome back then. Great atmosphere. Great concessions. A very well-kept and efficient theatre. AMC ruined them after taking over. I figured it was only a matter of time before this happened to the Rave locations here in BR. Sad.

11. Your suspicions are correct. Sometimes I sweep excess food under the seats. Movies often end every few minutes. Sometimes, three or more screenings end at the same time. I don't always have time to clean everything up.

12 Yes, movies start late. But they almost always end on time – otherwise, the ushers wouldn't know when to clean up. Theaters tell you to come in early so you have time to watch commercials and previews.

Carmike Cinemas took over the Raves in Birmingham and they have slowly already started going to shite.

You guys are spoiled. Check out the theaters here in Columbia. There are at least 10 of them and they are all darkly lit and rundown.

I've only been to the mall location once since the AMC takeover... I didn't have any problems. Yeah you had to wait a bit for the pre-movie crap and then the previews, but that seems like standard procedure at any large theater these days.

No problems with the concessions, movie, or the cleanliness of the auditorium.

Cinemark is ok. Took some time to grow on me. The chairs feel cheap and flimsy there, but let me emphasize that's an observation and a nitpick.

Every movie theater I have ever gone to (including the Rave before it was AMC) always starts 5-20 minutes after it's official start time due to all the advertisements and other movie trailers. Did you never notice that?

I've noticed this as well. Sometimes they don't even start the promotional shite until 5 or 10 minutes late. By then, once you get through 15 minutes of previews, you're almost 25+ minutes of shite before your movie starts.

Also, I've had terrible movie experiences at Perkins Rowe. One time a movie was playing and subtitles started going on and off...I had to let someone know and they fixed it (it wasn't a hearing-impaired showing). Another time the A/C was broken in the theater and they were still selling tickets for that movie. Another time the picture was really offset from the screen, and I had to go tell someone to get them to fix it. Other times I've noticed dirty theaters that haven't been cleaned as well.

I still go there, because I like the location, and I pretty much only use Perkins Rowe and the one at the Mall of LA. But several times, Perkins Rowe has severely disappointed me.

I think he means that the early shite doesn't start on time...that's what I'm talking about. I know when I go to a theater that I'm gonna see some actual commercials, then previews, then the movie. But the commercials don't start on time. That's what I mean (and I believe the OP to mean).

He wasn't "seriously upset" at all. In fact, he specifically said that it was nitpicky and just an observation.

But the point stands...if you're gonna start things late, just add 5 minutes to the starting time. You do realize that starting times are listed for a reason, right? We're not talking about a concert or something like that where you have to wait for the act to show up or whatever...if you're gonna list start times, then you should be able to start the movies on time. It's a pretty simple concept. Calm the frick down.

Yep. Its amazing how a change of ownership can do that. The Rave we go to in Vestavia was awesome. I was there a few weeks ago to see Man of Steel and you can just tell that the standards are a lot lower.

I went to see a movie two weeks ago at AMC in BR and they showed literally 8 previews before the movie.

Thank you Cocomo
Thats exactly what I'm talking about. I don't mind the promotional, it's the starting it late that pushes back everything else that I'm nitpicking. I'd rather that and a clean theater than a dirty one employees are scrambling to clean up on a Monday night while the half the theater is already full.

No different than something like Monday Night Football that starts at 8 but kickoff is at 8:20

Just a common practice now to tell people something starts at a given time, show commercials and other shite for 20 minutes, then start the event.
