Seriously, what is the purpose of a press secretary? It's just he office of propaganda with a better title.

Was he serious? Or was he just messing around prior to the start of the actual presser?

If serious, then I would LOVE to hear how opening the floodgates for tens of millions more illegal immigrants will improve an economy which is already on life support.

I was waiting for him to point to California as an example of the economic miracle associated with immigration influx.

they're protected in closed shop states, and are protected with government contracts (government must pay the "prevailing wage", which just so happens to be the union wage). unions have a long history of keeping minority workers unemployed via using government

now, in 10-20 years will immigration allow for the rescission of these protectionist laws? possibly

While you make very astute observations, there is only one thing they care about.

If you take illegals working below minimum, make them legal thereby subjecting them and their employers to wage law protections (minimum wage is terrible FWIW) and also giving them the ability to negotiate wages without the threat of deportation...it is a reasonable statement to suggest wages will increase...but only for the bottom of the bottom.

I like your logic. Here's the other side though.

This influx of "illegals" who are now legally allowed to be hired will increase the supply of Labor. Basic Supply and Demand states that prices (wages) will go down.

And to add in opinion, 1st generation immigrants are generally a hard working people.

If I all of a sudden have a larger pool of hard working laborers to choose from who are willing to work for minimum wage there is a good chance that someone paying slightly above minimum wage, say $10-12, will now be able to pay less for the same quality. And they will.

We were discussing amnesty which would be in reference to those already here, working illegally...so legitimizing them doesn't change the workforce in regard to numbers. How bout them apples.

I will definitely do this.

Best reasoning so far.
Illegals are working for peanuts right now and changing their status gives them more leverage to get better wages.

FWIW he didn't say amnesty.

Your title should read like this just for clarity.

seems likely that it will only be true for those illegals working for less than minimum wage IMV- which got me to thinking about how many of them actually do.

i'm thinking that a great deal of the males do harder manual labor and may actually earn above minimum wage as it is. for example, i've heard of the practice of contractors hiring them for construction, etc for a flat $100/day cash. sticking those types with payroll taxes and shite could easily cause legitimizing them to hurt on net.

i'm curious enough that i'm gonna have to look into the subject of if there are any studies on the breakdown of what exact work they all tend to do. anyone know?

It will increase wages of 11 million people who are currently under the table workers. The rest of us USA citizens will see wage decreases.

From what I've read, the make up of the illegal immigrants is largely people who don't have college degrees. At the very most they have GEDs and high school diplomas.
They will most likely start off working minimum wage jobs eg walmart, fast food, etc

If the owner of ______ Farms ( in the state of NC as one example) has to suddenly pay their usual $3-4 dollar an hour illegal workers- $7.25 an hour to pick strawberries and blueberries. They will hire the Americans. The Americans, that are losing their college PT jobs at Burger King drive thrus and shipping and receiving at Lowe's; to 40 year old men trying to raise a family. (SEE: THE HIGH UNEMPLOYMENT STATES: WHERE I HAVE BEEN TOLD THIS IS HAPPENING)

Ask any illegal Mexican in NC and they will tell you in two languages that they work here illegally (or half-ass legally now under Obama.)They will tell you that when their goal of about $35K is reached they will return to Mexico and buy a massive ranch and live like kings. The value of the dollar is making a lot of them currently return to Mexico.(Where I am sure they will receive absentee ballots to vote for Obama (or whatever dem) in the mail.)

It is all a big, sad joke. We already have billions of wasted IRS refunds due to Identity theft, due to the Clinton IRS loop hole which is a massive abuse of missing money at the IRS.

Also, allowing illegals to file taxes for massive (even retroactive) refunds in billions of dollars using EIC with all of their children.

It is a mess and the only thing the gang of eight is doing is making it so massive in failure that we may collapse just from an immigration bill. They all need to be stopped on both sides of the aisle. Only Cruz and Rand Paul seem to be telling the truth and speaking out.

This is not true. If you replay the video, you'll hear him talking generally about immigration reform. He wasn't addressing just the illegal immigrants aspect of it.

Immigration reform will increase wages.

then they'll be at minimum wage anyway

but, i doubt larger chains like walmart or fast food joints need to resort to that to find minimum wage workers. also, they're not the type of places to pay workers under the table
