He played from '26 to '66, only suffering one major injury.

He played year round in Winter Leagues but along with the Negro Leagues it's impossible to know how many pitches he may have thrown. The man must have had a rubber arm.

When asked about his age he responded, "How old would you be if you didn't know how old you are?" And later, "age is a question of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter."

In only 6 years in the MLB he pitched in 179 games going 28-31 with a 3.29 ERA, making the All-star game in '52 and '53.

Has anyone on here ever read anything or seen a good movie they'd recommend on the life of Satchel Paige?

Not getting to play in MLB until age 42 on forward, we will never know the definitive truth of his greatness. But, his overall career was incredible.

It's very difficult to say really

But I did this radio thing one time at a card show and was truly blessed to sit on air with Buck O'Neil for one hour

He talked about Satchel like he invented baseball. Said he was the greatest pitcher he ever saw.

That's the only stuff you can really go by IMO

When Satchel Paige was on the mound pitching, he had such confidence in his ability to strike out a batter that he would call in his outfielders and have them sit in the infield. Sometimes he’d call in his infielders, too. It was basically him against the batter. He did it, and he did it again and again.

Soul of the Game an HBO movie about Satchel Paine, Josh Gibson and Jackie Robinson. Real good. An underrated baseball classic.

The numbers he put up while old as shite in the Mlb is a pretty good indication.

And it's not like white MLBers didn't see him during the barnstorming days. They did see him and many confirm the stories of others fwiw

Eta: ppl think that he never faced white players that were MLBers. Which isn't true. He faced them just not in the NL or AL. Many white guys who were MLB players would play in the winter and such and face the negro teams and such

Even though there was some dubious record keeping with Negro League, there were studs playing each other all the time. Also, Negro League would have exhibitions against MLB clubs on Sundays (I believe), and the Negro Leaguers supposedly won about 2/3 of those games.

Oscar Charleston
Satchel Paige
Josh Gibson
Turkey Stearnes
Cool Papa Bell
Rube Foster
Etc

These dudes would have been studs in any league or era.

Ken Burns has a documentary called Baseball

Mainly chronicles the beginning of the game and focuses largely from the 1890s-Babe Ruth

Huge parts of the episodes focus on the Negro Leagues and former players that batted against him gave interviews of how he was the greatest pitcher of all time

This.

His autobiography "Maybe I'll Pitch Forever" is pretty good also.

Dizzy Dean said if he and Satch were on the same team, they would clinch the pennant by July 4th and fish the rest of the season. Satch was legit.
