I'm starting the process of obtaining my concealed carry. I was going to go with a Colt Delta Elite, but it's just to big for concealment. So I'm going with a Springfield XD .45. I wear my shirts untucked, so any suggestions for an OWB holster?

The XD45 is MUCH larger than a Delta Elite. You have to realize which dimensions are important for CC.

Width

Width

Width

That is the one that will get you. The XD line is great but the slide is incredibly wide.

Check out my YouTube channel, BigApple0828. I have a video called "Concealed Carry Methods." Watch that guy and you will learn a lot about carrying daily and what things to consider when purchasing a gun for it.

Well played.

I would suggest something single-stack for the OP. It does carry fewer rounds but will definitely be carried more often due to increased comfort.

I have the XDS and it's easy to conceal. Only problem is it's kind of heavy with loaded magazine.

The new 9mm may solve that problem. I'm sure the biggest difference in weight loaded vs. unloaded comes from 5 or 6 rounds of 45 ACP.

If youre referring to the XD 45 service model with a 4" barrel and full size grip, it will likely be too bulky for IWB carry.

The XDs biggest shortfall IMO after owning one know for a few months is barrel length

How is that a detriment?

The gun has a very specific role - CC. And one of the criteria of CC is to keep weight down. Extra mass on the barrel or slide by making it longer would negate this attribute.

I think they did everything right. Especially that fiber optic front sight, even if it isn't the best.

It still suffers from the same wide slide as the full size. The only difference is that the frame is a bit shorter, which is good for CC.

If you can find a good holster it should be okay. But again, the width is probably going to start bothering you.

Right now I'm shopping. I've read a lot of reviews on the XD which were pretty good. However I'm not locked in on it. But, I'm definitely getting a .45

Check out a Glock 30sf or Glock 36. Still kinda wide but more compact.

I think the extra weight of a longer barrel would make it a little less snappy. Not a huge complaint I still love mine just something to consider

I did check out your vid. Thanks, good info. For concealed I'm trying to put together all the info I need for proceeding. I've got everything else covered. In my truck I carry a Delta Elite & for home protection I have weapons all through out my home, but my main weapon is a riot gun then a Colt Python with a 6" barrel.

Solid lineup of firepower there.

If you want something for CC, I would buy something dedicated for CC that fits that exact niche.

Single stack 9s, 40s, and 45s would be your target market for a small and concealable gun.

Check out the XDs45 if you prefer the big bore round. Tons of people have bought them and love them. If you're a fan of XD's, you will too.

No offense to anyone, but all this talk about "too wide" or "too heavy" for CCW is a bit over the top.

I carry a G19 "24/7" -- unless in a NPE. And I know at least a dozen people who carry similar sized weapons (Glocks, M&P's and H-K's) "24/7."

Anybody can carry a mouse gun, or one of the "slim" guns that are often touted here. But if you live in, or travel to, BR (30 identified street gangs), New Orleans (more gangs than cops can count) or Houston (more gangs than New Orleans), you might suddenly need more rounds than some of the touted single stacks carry.

Of course there's also the likelihood that the guys carrying poodle shooters are better trained and more experienced than I.

But concealing a "heavy" gun, or a "wide" gun isn't rocket surgery. In the summer, get a good holster, get a good belt and wear a shirt that is somewhat loose. In the winter, use the same belt and holster, and just wear a jacket that is appropriate for the temperatures.

I'm sure somebody will soon post that "the odds" are really low that they'll need more than 5-6 rounds. If they want to "calculate the odds," that fine with me. I prefer to "calculate the consequences" (of needing, but not having, an adequate gun).

Seems like half the folks on this board spend an inordinate amount of their time watching youtube videos, and assume//preach that CCW means pocket carry. I wish just a few would sign up for a top-tier two-day or three-day defensive handgun training course and then post an AAR.
