re: Abandoned luxury cars all over Dubai

I worked with a guy who worked in Dubai for about a year. He had some odd things to say about that place.
Apparently, none of the natives work and get a $600K/year stipend from the govt.
The British are raping that place until there's nothing left
They hate the sight of construction so all the construstion workers are dressed in concrete colored clothes and all the heavy equipment is painted similarly
He did some work for an oil company that had an employee that was missing for 2 months before someone had noticed - turns out he died out in the middle of the desert while working and nobody felt like reporting it. Of course, no one really cared.
The term "In Sha'a Allah" is used a lot. Loose translation is "God wills it" which also means "oh well, things happen". I believe this term was used to explain the missing worker's death.

Who wants to head over to Dubai with a couple of sea cans and ship some of these cars back?

i read somewhere once that the royal families have some sort of heavy cargo plane that they load up all their cars and fly to Europe to get serviced. Idk if it's true or not.

I always love a good Dubai story. It's like 9th century laws/customs that govern a 21st Century economy.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree. If John Delorean wasn't a cokehead he was on track to revolutionize the auto industry. The DMC-12 is an automotive achievement.

Worked in libya for 6 months. Inshallah was always the excuse for not getting shite done. It really is a terrible culture all around.

The DMC-12 was a sharp car, IMO.

There are lots of classic, valuable cars that were not necessarily fast.

If I had the money, I'd rather own and drive a Deloreon modified to look like the Time Machine than an AMG Mercedes or fancy sports car. Everyone knows and recognizes the Time Machine. The Back to the Future trilogy was one of my favorite movies.

re: Abandoned luxury cars all over Dubai

Stories from guys I work with that lived there:

it is routine to see dozens of BMW and Mercedes Benz sedans abandoned in the parking lots around major transportation hubs. This article talks about the sports cars but abandoned luxury sedans are far more common

the police are wise to people escaping the country and they pay close attention to someone with a one way ticket out of the country. So debtors escaping are routinely buying round trip tickets to avoid detection

if you pack up your stuff and try to ship it out of the country, you are now subject to a background check before you leave

in these abandoned cars people also leave their house keys, their mortgage paperwork, their work visas etc because it makes it easier for the authorities to ID who has left, where they lived and what they owed

a Brit friend of mine bought a house there, the market collapsed, he was relocated to Houston and the company had to buy the house for what he paid for it just so he could leave the country. This transaction required an exemption from the CEO of the company because the company lost >$100K on the purchase of the house

Every time I start to think "I'd really like to see that place" I read a story like this and come back to Earth:
quote:

A British man sentenced to four years in jail in Dubai after cannabis weighing less than a grain of sugar was found embedded in the tread of his shoe has reportedly been pardoned ... The 43-year-old was arrested in September [2008] at Dubai International Airport ... Customs officers found 0.003 grams (0.0001 ounces) of cannabis in a cigarette stub stuck on the sole of one his shoes.

LINK
frick those idiots. The reason Dubai has been so built up in recent years is because the rulers saw that they were running out of oil and wanted to diversify into finance and tourism, but pulling stunts like that? No thanks, Grand Cayman is just fine for a tax haven/vacation.

That's what I was told. But, then again, they only make up about 15-20% of the total population so I can see how it's possible.

I've read enough Dubai accounts that I convinced my father when he goes to Saudi Arabia in November to not be tempted to take the "trek" to westernized Dubai. He'll be in Saudi for 4 years.

And I have no doubt every single one of those accounts are true.

I believe Saudi's also get a gov't stipend but it's pennies compared to that. What's kept them from killing the royal family I believe.
