"LC9 because the trigger is so smooth, and the reset is so minimal"

Man... Why are these your only options? I guess ruger LC9 to answer your question.

Size and price. Can you recommend something of similar size OTD for $400?

I have a Kel-Tec PF9. Kel-Tecs are frequently critized on internet forums. Although I'd guess some of it's justified, I'm very happy w/ mine. It's been 100% reliable except for one visit to the range when it was too dirty (that was my fault). Realistically speaking, the Ruger LC9 is a knock off of the PF9. The dimensions are nearly identic The LC9 also has an external safety lever, mag disconnect and an obnoxious loaded chamber indicator, but I don't count those as advantages. OTOH, the LC9 is noticably more refined than the PF9. W/ either gun, just be aware of what you're getting: The recoil will be snappy; the won't be fun to shoot as a "range gun"; really small semi-autos like this can be VERY finicky; you may have to learn to deal w/ some idiosyncracies of the gun for it to run well. I've been happy w/ my PF9 and haven't considered buying the LC9.

I've got the Kahr CW45 the KR mentioned. I really like it. The CW9 was not available when I bought my PF9, but if it had been, I might well have ended up w/ the Kahr. Even w/ today's inflated prices, IF you can find one, it should come in under $400.

PF9, proven track record of stopping a high thug from ground and pounding you in a dark alley.

I carry an LC9, but it's not a range gun.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I'm going to check out the Kahr. Was hoping to stay with one caliber (already have a SR9c) but I usually have some .45 ammo since I shoot my brothers 1911 when we go to the range so it's not outside of what I normally have in the ammo can.

Still though, anyone have side by side experience with the pf9 an lc9? I'm fully aware of what to expect in a small single stack but since I'll be in shorts and tshirt most of the time when I carry, I thought it would be the best option for me.

For that reason alone, every man should own two of them.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the CM9.

I purchased mine on Bud's about 2 years ago for right around $400. It is one of the least snappy single stack subcompact 9mms on the market. Of all the little 9mms I've fired, it is definitely the smoothest. It has the smoothest trigger as well, even if the travel is a bit long.

This is not to say that the Shield 9 or the XDs9 aren't great guns because they are. I just have more trigger time behind the CM9. These both have shorter traveling triggers than my CM9 but aren't quite as smooth.

About 4-5k rounds later, the Kahr still runs like a top. I highly recommend it over your options.

Does anyone know somewhere I can tryout the trigger on a kahr cw9? Bass pro has one I think but they won't let you dry fire their guns.

Or if anyone has one and can meet at bass pro one evening, I have my own ammo and your range fee is on me.
