Friend of mine wants to ditch Cox for this, and after looking it up it really looks like a shite deal with throttled speeds once you pass your data cap...80 GB/month for $99/month.

I told him to avoid it like the plague.

Sounds fricked up. They push the high speed but downplay the low cap. Hughesnet Info

My parents live way out in the country and it was the only Internet available to them so they got it. Let me tell you, that shite sucks!

Hughesnet is THE WORST!!! It is slower than dial up from the 80's and by the time you buy five dolla tokens it is A LOT of money for trash service.

Haha...my inlaws had it for a while. What is crazy is they had several other options available including DSL and cable....

My Dad has it I think. He bounces around internet services like a sex addict hooker on red bull and coke. I just know it sucks at his house.

Have had it for about 5 years. It's the only option at my house other than dial up.

They sure as hell don't tell you about the cap. The install guy told me once he had everything installed. It's also slow as frick and won't work if rain is anywhere near. Or if it's bad storms between Alabama and Texas. Ours is about 75 - 80 per mo

You should only consider satellite internet for redundancy if you're a business, or if you live so far out there are no other options. The problem isn't the cost or the data caps. The problem is that your internet connection has to travel back and forth from earth to the satellite creating a superslow connection. If you're streaming a movie it's probably fine, but if you're loading a site like TD where there are tons of images then it will seem like dial up because a request has to be made for each part of the page that loads and those requests are slowed down by having to travel through the atmosphere and back.

I'm going to send him to this thread. He and his wife watch a lot of TV shows and movies, so all this info will make him see the light! Thanks!

I just looked on their web site and did not see an 80 GB plan. They only have a plan that was 20 GB "day time"/when you are normally on the internet and 20 GB between 2AM and 8AM. Total is only 40 GB. Looks pretty shitty to me. I live a place where satellite internet is the only option and I went with Excede (Wild Blue). It has a cap at 25 GB "day time" but also has unlimited download/upload betwee midnight and 5 AM. Which I use all the time. Data transfer is really fast at that time of night. Until you go over your cap during the month Excede is pretty good. It usually averages around 15-30 Mbps until you reach your cap. The cool thing is you can always buy more data if you run out, which I always do. It's expensive but its better than Hughesnet.

Here is the link. LINK
