Out of those, I pick Dragon Quest 8. Game has aged beautifully.
Also, did you ever get any of the Ys? I just beat Ys 2 last night and it's right up your alley (super retro RPG).

I bought the Ys pack on Steam. I forgot about it until you just said that.

The only game I can comment on in that list is Grandia. However, I mostly played Grandia 2 (the 2 stories aren't connected, btw). They both have the same combat system, which I really liked at the time and thought was better than most JRPG's I had played up to that point.
It's difficult to explain, but the combat is a mix of real time and turn based. Everyone on the battlefield is on a little timeline for when they can receive commands, be counter attacked, and execute their own attacks. Because of this you have to take into account how long it will take a character to execute their own attack and weigh the chances of them getting counter attacked before they will finish their move. It's probably best to just watch a video of it in action.

Not sure how it stands up these days since the last time I played it was almost 10 years ago.

What pics and videos I've seen of Grandia, it looks awesome. I try not to watch too many review videos since they are often loaded with spoilers.

Never finished this one, but I loved me some Suikoden II. Not sure why these games are so rare...if you want the actual games, that is.

Oh, I understand. FWIW, that video is only one early fight against some nondescript monsters. No plot at all is covered.
But, I'm also very wary of watching stuff like that for fear of something being spoiled.

I hope to find a copy of Suikoden II in the future that is decently priced. I'm not very big into emulation.

The game really is awesome, it sort of has a Pokemon feel where you want to catch em all...haha. Sometimes there are some decent prices on it on ebay. You'll just have to keep your eyes open.
I have one of the older PS1's that allow for the swap trick. I played this via a burned copy of the game. Worked for me

A gem in my collection.

It may be on the PSN store, idk. It'd be nice.

Damn. At least Persona 2 is on there. The cost of that game is usually up there as well.

Followed shortly thereafter by Suikoden II and Suikoden III. 3 of the greatest RPGs ever created.
Suikoden IV was a dumpster fire, though, so avoid that one.

I read that they pretty much went downhill after III (but, I didn't make it too far through that one...may pick it up again).
What's wrong with IV exactly?

It was incredibly boring. It took ages to move from one location to the next and it was ocean based, which meant for large portions of the game, you were looking at the sea. It just felt tired.
But you should pick up 3 again. It really is spectacular. The way they tweaked the fighting system was great and the story was really enjoyable. It's no Suikoden 2, which I may regard as the best RPG I've ever played, but it is right behind it.

The whole three different storylines and characters kinda threw me off. I may take your advice.
I remember giving up on Suikoden I because I gave one of my characters the device that lets you jump from town to town...and he left my party. That pissed me off so much

Hahaha, that sucks. Great story for that one, though. Lots of fun.
