I don't post here much but enjoy reading the board. Just thought I'd pass along that my family and I just returned from a vacation in Gulf Shores and saw more sharks near the beach than we have in the last 10 years of vacationing there.

We literally saw a shark everyday at the beach, some larger than others, mostly bull sharks but also a hammerhead. There were a ton of "minnows" in the water and a lot of smaller fish so I assume that's what was drawing the sharks closer.

One particular bull shark (about 4' long) got within about 5 yards of the beach and I thought I'd be a bad arse and grab his tail and pull him up the beach (he was swimming in about 2' of water). I got close enough to grab him and reached down and realized there was about a 50-50 shot that instead of trying to swim away he might just spin around and bite my leg so fear prevailed and I stopped short of an unnecessary trip to the emergency room.

Anytime you're in a tower by the beach, all it takes is a pair of binoculars and you'll see em everywhere.

Smart thinking, get someone to video it first...

I believe you but fwiw, haven't a single shark in 10 years of vacationing there. Everyone we talked to was seeing them as well this year and none had seen them before.

Water was particularly clear, very carribean-like, but it's been clear in past years too.

I've seen 1. This past June it was the Rays that were everywhere. I got brushed up a couple of times.

last several years we would see schools of rays that would swim by us. we'd stay in the water and they'd scoot right by, 15-20 at a time.

@ glassman - believe me I'm ALWAYS on lookout for sharks and any other sea creatures around the family. Prolly more paranoid than I need to be about it.

That shark would've probably reacted like that ol' junkyard dog I poked with a stick while he was sleeping, when I was a lad.

Been seeing many sharks in OB /. Gs for Years

Always been there and in large numbers.....most of the time they are past the first sand bar making them harder to see....

Heck we hooked one that pulled us around in a kayak like we were a popping cork 4 years ago

Was in Galveston one time and I was walking back from the second sand bar to the first. For as long as I've been going out there, the depth between the 1st and 2nd bar usually is usually up to my waist. For some reason that day it was really deep, around my upper chest but anyway so when I reached the first sand bar I turned around and saw the fin and tail of a bull shark probably about 6ft long swimming between the two sandbars literally just where I had walked from no more than 20ft in front of me. Closest I've ever been visibly but people are around them all the time you just can't see them.

my nephew knows a guy that is on a helicopter regular along the beach.

Told him that if people saw what he sees, they'd never go in the water.

They are always their...honestly sharks around you more than you think. They are extremely stealthy, you can really only see them close to shore, unless your in a tower or on you hotel/condo balcony.

I feel like this time you probably just saw one early on and were looking for them since.

I have a crazy story but don't feel like sharing. Too long and kind of unbelievable.

Yes. Y'all are right that sharks are always there

But I can assure you that we have seen more sharks while fishing and diving this year than any other time in recent memory
