Wine Country Vacations

My wife and I are looking to take a trip in the next few months to either California or Oregon. Anyone advise one state/area over the others? Places to stay, specific wineries, any advice is appreciated.

It all depends on what kind of budget you're looking for. Napa has more in closer proximity but costs a lot more than Oregon. As well Oregon lacks the beautiful resorts and spas of napa. You can email me at yahoo and ill be willing to throw some recommendations your way.

We are going to look into the Sonoma area. Dry Creek, Russian River, etc. What I have seen and read on Healdsburg is very inviting.

Was on101 in N Cali a few weeks ago. Beautiful area. I'd do Napa. Go to the Pacific at Mendocino...beautiful town on the coast.

Which resorts/Inns do you suggest in the Sonoma/Napa area?

We stayed here with another couple Wine Country Villa...it is right down the road from Kendall Jackson, and is a great place that is central to all wine areas. It is just a few min south of Healdsburg. The best thing is that the lady that owns it stocks the place with everything you need for breakfast, etc. Very clean, and is really quiet. Great for coming home after going to wineries all day.

OP - Actually, Heddlesburg is really a great town for tourists and residents. It's pricey, but really nice. What time of year are you looking at traveling? Give me a time of year and length of stay and I could give you some tips. There's a lot to see/do/taste within a 10 mile radius of our little cow town....well, it used to be a cow town.

Sonoma/Healdsburg/Russian River is preferred in our house. We end up doing wine and beer and having Lagunitas and Russian River there makes it pretty easy.
We do want to go to Portland to visit a friend that just moved there. Any suggestions in that area would be appreciated,

I was shocked at how many wineries there were around Fredriksburg(sp)Texas. Must have passed 15 in a 15 mile stretch.

I went to Willamette Valley last September if you have any questions. I went to quite a few of those on the list you linked.
To the OP, are you only looking at drinking wine with relaxation activities (spa, scenery, etc.) or are you interested in hiking, beer, biking? I'd lean toward Portland if the latter, Napa/Sonoma if the former.

My wife wants to go to Willamette - I am not leaning one way or another at this point. She would rather shopping and a stay at the Four Seasons over a nature walk though.

I prefer Sonoma to Napa, but you can easily do both. Someone here turned me on to David Coffaro in Dry Creek, which I'd recommend. He's a madman Raiders fan who wears sleevless shirts and grows shite most in Dry Creek wouldn't, but he makes some really good-- and very affordable-- wines. Ask the girl in the tasting room to give you some barrel tastings and get info on his futures, as they're an amazing deal.
In Sonoma, off the top of my head, I'd also recommend Unti, Rafanelli, Copain (the guy who runs the tasting room is a NOLA transplant), Rochioli, and Emeritus. In Napa, I'd definitely make a tasting reservation at Phelps to enjoy the wine and fantastic view.
As other posters said, there are many craft brewers in the area as well, so if you're a beer geek, don't miss your chance to at least stop by Russian River Brewing.
Oh, and eat at the Fatted Calf in Napa for lunch one day, and slip into a heavenly meat-induced coma.

My wife and I have been to the wineries around Dundee, OR (roughly 40 minutes south of Portland) multiple times and been to multiple areas in CA. OR is less expensive by far, + you can go to the Columbia River Gorge, Crater Lake, white water rafting on the Rogue River, the coast, Cannon Beach/Astoria, etc. There are some other small wine areas, but have not been to them. Not going to say OR wine is better or not, but the Pinot Noirs are often very good. You would likely find a much better selection of good whites in CA as wine country in CA is much more expansive/extensive. Here is a link to the Dundee area wineries if interested. Can't go wrong doing either.

A friend who is a UTe alum talked me into going to the UT/OR game @ Autzen on 9/14. We are going to the Gorge to do some wind boarding and have received permits to climb/summit Mount St Helens, then hit Dundee on the way down to the game.

Thanks for the recommendations last week, we visited Russian River and Bear Republic on Saturday. Didn't make it to any wineries. Scopa is a great place for dinner in Healdsburg.
