So with a new season of The Newsroom starting tomorrow night, I couldn't help but wonder what the board's thoughts were on season 1, and who is excited to catch the new season. I found an article that really sums up how I feel about it in The Atlantic a couple of days ago.

quote:

Despite all of the frustrations, though, I'm going to keep watching. In general, if a show starts to drag or if a character gets amnesia or something, I'm out. Yet Sorkin has created something perfectly infuriating, where I'm not sure that I'm enjoying it, but I am completely engrossed.

Might as well have started this on the poli board. Liberals for the most part like it, conservatives for the most part hate it.

Not sure why the libs like it. The relationships are written at the saved by the bell level. Oh wait, answered my question there.

The silly relationship garbage detracts from the show.

Also the premise. No way Will was ever a conservative the way he is written. I understand he may think the Tea Party isn't good for the conservative movement but then how about 1 fricking single episode where he attacks the alleged OPPOSITE of his ALLEGED conservative viewpoint.

I like Sorkin, but since leaving West Wing, it is apparent to me that Wells kept him in check. At least in TV shows, he seems to need someone to tone down his left wing agenda.

The humor he was so good at writing in Sports Night and West Wing falls flat and seems sophomoric.

I typically lean left, but I can't stand most of the writing here. I love balanced approaches, which obviously don't exist in today's media. I'm hoping he'll take some shots against the left this season with re-election being covered as well as a few of the recent scandals. I also hope they tone Maggie's freaking out down a little bit...

West Wing is one of my favorite shows ever. At least with West Wing, in 7 seasons there was only 1 EVIL republican and 1 evil conservative minister, oh and 1 evil radio host.

There was a balance that made it possible to enjoy the show despite political leanings.

Heck, if Newsroom was about a liberal anchor going after conservatives, I wouldn't have a problem with it, but the whole nonsense of spending every single episode attacking various conservative and not one time hitting the other side smells. Smells real bad.

I still wouldn't like the show with the poorly written jokes and relationships.

I'll keep watching because I do like Sorkin and I like the cast....

I enjoy the show and I'll be watching. But I am in no way getting involved in the discussion this year. Some people have problems separating their political views from fake scripted television.

Here's the shite show from last year if you want to read it.

It's painful, really.

Like the show a lot. It is very Sorkin, and follows the model of every other TV show he started. Quicky, punchy dialogue, a lot of relationship sap, woeful ineptitude in regards to technology (still amazing to me he wrote the screenplay about one of the biggest technological innovations/creations in our generation).

Though I do think he's punched up his ability to write female characters a bit. He's always criticized for writing women as overly emotional sasses, but it's always struck me that pretty much all of his characters are overly emotional sasses.

I don't. I've said 100s of time I loved West Wing.

The premise is garbage and you aren't being remotely honest if you disagree with that statement.

The relationships are written at the high school level.

And not sure why the other poster said he was doing a better job with women. The women in this cast are a bigger wreck than all his previous shows combined.

The premise that they want to make a news network devoted to reporting the news is garbage?

This is pretty much Aaron Sorking 101.

I don't know how you could think these relationships are any more immature than Donna and Josh on WW. Or Zooey and Charlie. Hell, even FLOTUS and POTUS quibble over the most inane bullshite throughout the series.

I mentioned the premise and that is NOT what I mentioned. You know what I am talking about since I already mentioned it this thread so you are being dishonest. Good to know.

All of those were written better than any of the relationships in Newsroom. Donna and Josh also had much better chemistry than anyone on Newsroom.

I'm a dumb, stupid, idiotic, _______-loving, left-wing, communist, pinko, Democrat who wants to give all of my and your tax money to a certain segment of the population, so I love the show.

And Munn's tits.

Best thing about that show is the intro song.

It really does inspire me.

I'm ready for the new season! I went back and watched the first season a few weeks ago, and I still enjoyed it.

I really wish people like TigerMyth would just stfu and keep their political whinings out of threads related to this show.

How about you actually dispute a single thing I have said.

I listed several things other than politics.

The show AS WRITTEN makes no sense. If Will was a democrat it would make sense but since he claims to be a conservative the show makes no sense since he ONLY attacks conservatives.

The show is poorly written and it isn't just politics. The relationships are weak and the humor falls flat.

I'm on the record loving The West Wing and Sports Night both of which were equally liberal but also both of which had better writing.

If you can't take real criticism of a show you like then I guess you need to stop looking at the internet because evidently you are too sensitive. Frances.

Then why on earth would you watch it? You enjoy being miserable or something?

Yeah, I've stated countless times, the West Wing is one of my favorite shows of all times so I guess you are right. Certainly I wouldn't watch any of his other shows.

Oh wait, I watched Sports Night too. Oh also watched Studio 60. Oh and all of his movies.

I continue to watch because I hope he can turn it around and make it watachable.

Have you actually read any national reviews? They pretty much say almost exactly what I have said. In fact they go further and attack his poor writing of women.

By the way, you don't fire all of the staff writers if you think things are working perfectly. Do you?
