Bryant signs

quote:

Bryant, a third baseman whose 31 home runs for the University of San Diego exceeded the totals of 223 NCAA Division I teams, was in town for a physical Wednesday.

Also, I found this article about trading Garza interesting and well thought out. If you're one of those Cubs fans that loves the Theriots/Fontenots/Campanas of the world, I especially recommend it.

My favorite excerpt from the article:

quote:

This is ingrained behavior. Cubs fans fall in love with their players, always have. There is example after example of it. I don’t mean to pick on Kerry Wood, but he’s the first to come to mind. He’s still treated like a superstar on the North Side, even though he never won more than 14 games in a season. The ratio between accomplishment and reverence is all screwed up in Cub Land. Go down the warm-feelings list. Rick Monday. Bobby Dernier. Joe Pepi-tone. If Manny Trillo came to town, there might be a parade.

I have a real problem with this. Let me preface this by saying Kerry Wood is my favorite Cub second to only Mark Grace.

Now, counting how many wins in a pitcher's win/loss record is kind of...blockheaded. I would assume that's a given. For instance, Travis Wood is 6-6 this season. By Morrissey's thought process, he'd be a middling nobody. Look deeper, Rick. Travis Wood has been outstanding.

Second, Kerry Wood is awesome. Most people, especially Cubs fans, love Kerry Wood for two reasons: one is the 20 K game against the Astros and the second is the rumor that he smashed Sammy Sosa's salsa-music blaring boombox in the clubhouse when Sammy left the stadium early in the final throws of his Cubs career.

Add to that Kerry Wood has stuck around Chicago and sort of become the new Billy Williams. He's got charitable organizations in the area and stays connected to the franchise.

/rant

I love you, Kerry Wood!

Garza's trade value will never be higher than it is now. You get what you can for him.

Kris Bryant

And as far as Garza goes I would honestly like to keep him around just because I dont see teams shelling out top level prospects for him. Might as well just see if he can stick around as a solid 2/3 and get an ace in the offseason

I saw proposed deal that had Garza/Gregg going to Detroit and the Cubs getting back Avisail Garcia and few other guys. That would be a nice deal.

I like Gregg, I think he's serviceable for the organization.

I'd like to see Garza traded to a real contender to give him a shot at a ring with an under the table deal to resign with the cubs in the off-season for a very long term deal.

and very glad Bryant FINALLY signed. about time, let's get him in the system. I wouldn't be surprised if he's starting on opening day next year.

I still like the Olt/Martin deal that was rumored last winter.

well durability for signing a long contract and having him for the rest of the season are different things. I think you can easily get a top 10 guy from a team who is in the top 100 overall...easily.

Probably with a few project players too...which is better than having garza for 2 more months. The only question in my mind remains is if it's better than a compensation pick...becuase re-signing him is the wrong move.

and with olt's struggles losing that year of control that was part of what sweetened the deal last year really isn't a factor.

I think Olt will be saved for a bigger prize. He's a corner guy anyway and we seem to be set there w Bryant signing. Unless he can play OF.

Garza is a free agent too. You can always sign him next year after you trade him

I don't see why people are so married to garza .

You know why...cubs fans love players for intangibles...not what they actually do.

I agree with you by the way.

I'm not married to him, either. But if the Cubs can't get what they want in a trade, they may be content holding on to him. I don't hate that idea. I like the idea of them having a high asking price. Someone will step up.
