I was hoping this would happen if they cancelled happy endings and it has. I hope he stays for the rest of the show, they can get rid of Winston if need be

i just read through a couple new girls threads and people are saying it picks up in season 2 and shite and i am baffled because i absolutely loved season 1 that i just finished. dont even get how it could be better.

Well I haven't watched the pilot in forever but Wayans was great in Happy Endings and Winston is by far the weakest link on New Girl. You can always change a character's characteristics from the pilot onwards, hell Winston is decent now but I don't think I laughed at anything he did for like the first seven episodes he was on

I don't think he picked, Happy Endings premiered a year earlier and his contract dictated he go back if it got renewed

Winston has grown to be a big part of the shows humor.
And people have some serious revisionist history about DW on New Girls pilot. His character was pretty bad (not saying he couldnt improve it like winston did but just yelling everything doesnt really work for me)

Yea I'm not saying he was great in the pilot just that DW is naturally funnier than whoever plays Winston. If DW had stayed on I'm confident they would have evolved his character just like they did Winston and he'd be even funnier now. Maybe not though he's getting at minimum a six episode arc so we'll see

Jess' presence has decreased, in a good way. Schmidt has varying levels of tolerability, in the best way possible. Nick is the funnest character on the show, and probably the best. But Winston has seen the most consistent comedic and character growth over the two seasons. It would be a crime to boot him now.

Improved a lot over the 2nd season as well. He seemed way too forced at times during 1st season to me.

Coach seemed to have good chemistry with those guys in the pilot and was much more believable as the jock of the group as opposed to Winston who's basically the smallest person on the show.
I finally came around on Winston the last 2/3 or so of this season, though. Before that I really thought he was a mediocre actor and didnt like what they were doing with his character at all.
Only because I liked him in the pilot, I wouldn't mind seeing what they might do with Coach if they brought him back.

Their occupations are pretty irrelevant at this point. And i didnt see much chemistry between any of them in that pilot
