What are the pros and cons of the saddle mount vs the cantilever barrel mount on a remington 870? Just inherited a 870 that had a saddle style mount and wanted the OB's opinion.

I like the aesthetics of the cantilever and the fact that you can switch out the slug barrel for a bird barrel very easily. Do any other advantages/disadvantages exist?

Cantilever works.

I don't like the way saddle mounts are made.

2. i bought a slug gun and with the cantilever on it and had great groups at 150yds.

he said he shoulda got the cantilever, thats all i know haha sorry

What dont you like exactly? Do you not like the concept of saddle mounts just in general? Btw, this is for a 20ga 870 express magnum. Thanks.

Just look at it. It doesn't look like it would work worth a damn.

I KNOW cantilever mounts work. No way I'd trust a saddle mount on a shotgun. The barrel is usually loose in the receiver, and that mount probably vibrates like a bitch.

I just don't see how it would be overly accurate.

I agree... Am I able to get rid of the saddle mount and add a cantilever mount onto the slug barrel thats on the gun already? or will I have to buy a slug barrel that already has a cantilever mount installed? The stock slug barrel thats on the gun now has iron sights installed.

You're better off selling your current slug barrel and getting one with a cantilever mount on it. I have had success with the saddle mounts out to 100 yards. I never tried grouping out further than that.

I would be very hesitant to try to add a cantilever mount to the current barrel.

Any suggestions for a good slug barrel w/ a cantilever mount in 20gauge?

None of the above... Get a legit mount done and you'll be much happier..

I used this on my Benelli M2 turkey gun..

Only problem is once you add it, there it stays...

You need to buy a cantilever barrel unless you think you want to mill a base and weld it on there

I'd shoot it before I did any of the above. It might do well with the saddle mount and you might be worried for nothing.

Yeah Ill probably give that a try first... I would like to set this shotgun up for my wife. Ultimiately, I want her to have the option of changing out the slug barrel for a bird barrel and vice versa. I feel that a saddle style mount would obstruct her view when using the bird barrel.

Worry more about getting the recoil down than anything.

12ga slugs in a pump hurts

My bad. Selective reading.

Hornady makes some 250gr sabots that are pretty easy on the shoulder.

Good luck. Hopefully the saddle mount works and you don't have to worry about anything else.

I would take it to a reputable gunsmith and have it drilled and tapped. That's what I had done to my 870.
