Via Tulane sports law professor Gabe Feldman, former NFL linebacker Barrett Green has sued the Redskins, Williams, and tight end Robert Royal for a knee injury Green suffered in 2004, when Green played for the Giants.

Per Feldman, the lawsuit alleges that “Redskins coaches directed their players to disregard criminal and civil laws, as well as NFL rules, to intentionally injure opponents.” Green also contends that he was “suspicious” Royal may have specifically targeted Green.

Here's the fun part. I know we are past it, but still kind of gets the blood boiling.

quote:

After the league announced the discovery of a bounty program with the Saints, players coached elsewhere by Williams claimed that Williams used a bounty system in places other than New Orleans. The NFL opted not to investigate the use of bounties by other teams that employed Williams, possibly because the NFL realized that it was a much broader cultural reality of NFL football.

In our view, the NFL had no desire to venture down that rabbit hole, because the NFL would have realized that imposing crippling punishment on the Saints for doing what many other teams had done would have been grossly unfair. As former Commissioner Paul Tagliabue reasoned in the decision striking down the suspensions of various Saints players, culture change should happen more gradually, with all offenders having a chance to cease the now-frowned-upon practice before anyone is disciplined for it.

That's obviously just an opinion. Anyways, slow news day.

Depending on how this goes, it could be a dangerous precedent.

Someone needs to sue the NFL for compensatory draft picks for the Saints.

The best-case scenario would be Goodell fired by the NFL for gross incompetence.

IF something happens with this suit, how does Goodell justify only targeting the Saints when he knew it was going on around the league? Doesn't that put him in some kind of 3rd party liability situation?

Royal was a TE. When did the defensive coordinator tell him to do it? This doesn't have a prayer.

This right here is the reason for this:

imposing crippling punishment on the Saints

The NFL can stand back and say, "We have done everything we can possibly do to end bounties and the hurting of players." True or not

Yeah, the statute of limitation will be an issue. They may have an argument that it couldnt have been discovered until bounty gate broke, though.

It's almost like somebody's throwing out a shitty, unwinnable bounty lawsuit out there on purpose so that it will lose and everyone will get the point and the precedent will be set. .

Yea I mean he is going to have to argue that this falls out of the scope of the game and then that there was a a reckless wrong doing where the player intended to do the act but not the harm.

Gonna be difficult especially with the way courts treat sports cases as contact sports are inherently risky.
