I wonder who's homes got displaced?

Oh, and which fossil fuels caused this disaster?

Yea, the whole article was like "I've got this thing, and it's awesome, I'm not going to show you."

Really cool. I got a kick out of the first comment to the story: Note to self, Ben Raines can't keep a secret.

We saw hundreds of HUGE, old arse cypress tree trunks on the floor of Mobile Bay. These had been covered up by the water for God knows how long.

Per the story, these stumps are offshore, not in Mobile Bay. Still neat thing to see hough.

re: Primeval forest discovered in Gulf of Mexico

Of similar note, here is an article from Sunday's Post & Courier (Charleston) that references many bathymetric mapping projects projects I worked with offshore of SC while at the College of Charleston. We found evidence of ice scours from the last ice age about 60 miles offshore.

They are currently seeking funding to perform archaeological research and locate evidence of Clovis settlements that were at the edge of the ice during the Older Dryas (small window of an extremely cold climate in which the glaciers reached their maximum southward advance).

We have evidence of 3 separate meandering river beds, and a small forest about 40 miles off the coast of Myrtle Beach.

Cool stuff.

So he swore his buddy to secrecy, only to have his friend tell the entire scientific community about it. Some friend.

re: Primeval forest discovered in Gulf of Mexico

My dad's neighbor told me for years about going to catch big arse red snapper with a friend off "an old sunken riverbed with cypress stumps"etc. I just figured they didn't know how to read a depthfinder and/or were crazy old people. Then this story broke.

Derp derp.
