In La. I know this has been discussed here but what needs to be done when buying or selling a gun to an individual? If I buy a handgun from someone, what do I need to do legally?

The gun was never "registered" in your name to begin with, just get a bill of sale

Serious question? The serial number can not be traced to me?

Possibly, depending on how you bought it, but your bill of sale would be the golden ticket

No, but let's say the gun is used in a crime and left at the scene. The ATF will start with the gun manufacturer, and see who what company it was sold too. They go there and see who was the first person to buy it. Go to that person and see if they were the last to have it, etc. This is the reason for a bill of sale, to show that you sold it to someone if the police come looking...

Real life isn't like the movies. The serial number is only contained on the form you fill out in the store when you buy the gun. Nowhere else is it attached to your name. Even then its a serial number and type of gun (long gun or handgun); no make model or caliber. You font have to do anything legally to sell a gun to someone else.

Good info thanks. Also, I have been meaning to ask you something Wick? I saw some pics of you a while back of you and your dogs I think. You look familiar. Did you work for Delchamps many years ago?
