re: Star Trek: TOS Watchers - Season 1 Wrapup *Page 25*

I watched it last night. I had never seen that one before. You can tell it was a pilot, with the different look on Spock, different uniforms, different Dr etc. Took me a minute to figure out that was Sally Kellerman.

The theme is one that was revisited in both TOS and TNG so it wasn't as fresh to me. Still overall a good episode.

I made some notes when I watched and here are a few:

•Uniforms
•This yeoman can get it
•Hot Lips can get it too
•It would have been interesting to go back and look more into these ESP tests they give officers
•It's like Spock went full circle. In this he was clearly more animated, emotional. By Undiscovered Country he exhibited hints of those emotions again, as if age had shown him that his half human half was as necessary as his Vulcan half.
•I still say the new movie should have been this.
•James Riberius Kirk

Good depiction of the demands and pains of command.

I love the "canon" answer - Mitchell was incredibly powerful, but, in the end, he was still human.

Ha, his best friend conjured up a tombstone for Kirk and goofed on the spelling. I'd have preferred if canon never addressed it rather than "new-Q is a bad friend"

I was hoping there'd be a new thread for this...

You think we should have a new thread for each episode? I was thinking more like an omnibus thread like one of the GoT ones. I'll update the thread title with the page of the new episode discussion, and that second post I'll use to create a table of contents and add the Memory Alpha links as we go.

You don't think that will work?

I can't really tell you not to do it as a master thread since I have a bunch of those on the Music board myself.

But this project is on the clock, with three or four days for episodes. What will happen is when episodes are buried 5 pages deep in the thread you will end up getting the same 3 or 4 guys posting.

If you have a new thread for every episode, and include a link to putlocker or some other site where people can watch free and without much hassle, you'll end up getting some casual fans and newbs participating.

I can see the logic to your approach. Perhaps you could have individual episode threads, and one master thread with links to all of them (like what was done for Arrested Development). You could include a link to the updated master thread in every new episode thread.

I can see what you're saying. However, I envision this pace being a little too slow, with people wanting to move on more quickly. I'm going to try to soldier on with the master thread.

However, if it looks like people spill in late for a particular episode, I will link to a spinoff thread when I transition - people that want to carry on, can go, but otherwise we move on.

I think that will work.

Liked Spock's earlier, more alien look.

Loved the hot yeoman. And we have Janice Rand coming up. Kirk took his staffing responsibilities seriously.

Agree with Fletch that I was kind of hoping that the Into Darkness villain was going to be Gary Mitchell.

Have to strongly disagree with Kirk's decision to maroon a crazy demigod on Delta Vega. Uninhabited, yes. But it seemed to be a vitally important source of minerals. Conveniently close to the edge of the galaxy, though, which makes the Enterprise's "accomplishment" a little less impressive.

The yeoman from this episode, Smith (played by Andrea Dromm) was supposed to be the bridge yeoman. She had to choose between continuing with Star Trek (whose future was up in the air after 2 pilots) and making the film, "The Russians are coming, the Russians are coming" - she chose the film and the rest is history, with Grace Lee Whitney coming in as Yeoman Rand.

Good episode. Interesting to see how the series developed from this pilot.

I would have loved to see this as a mid-season episode, though. I wonder how McCoy would have advised Kirk in dealing with his crazed friend.

An interesting factoid - the Transporter Room set was not completed for the pilot, so Scotty stood at the helm/navigation console to beam the flight recorder aboard. It doesn't have the familiar slide controls.

He would have probably carried the humanity part of the episode - Kirk unded up doing that - and maybe it was appropriate as it was his friend.

Another interesting vibe is that Mitchell, although the navigator (ETA: I stand corrected - helmsan, Kelso was the navigator in this episode, but they were sitting in the opposite chairs, form a traditional standpoint), was a lieutenant commander, equivalent in rank to Scotty - because of his long service with Kirk he had a much closer peer relationship to Kirk and Spock than any other officer, other than Scotty and McCoy.

While this is not, in and of itself, all that unusual, Spock, Scotty and McCoy are all older than Kirk - this is the only "younger" officer, in my memory, to appear to have this status.

I wonder if they had originally planned on making the navigator position a more important one, perhaps as the dept. head of stellar cartography or other related sciences, as Uhura is head of communications, Data is operations dept head, etc. etc.

Making the navigator a senior officer and dept head would have opened up many more opportunities for "exploration" episodes.

That's certainly possible.

And clearly helm (Sulu) became more important on the Enterprise, as the navigation chair was a revolving door until Walter was cast in the second season. As we'll see in coming episodes, that was a typical spot for a guest star for much of the first season.

Of course, we all know that Sulu was fast-tracked for command, in a similar vein as Kirk (although not quite as fast), so maybe that was a situational thing.

If I remember correctly, after Gary is knocked out, Kirk shouts "Helm! Helm!" And Spock rushes over to Mitchell's station. While he may have been talking to Kelso, it also wouldn't surprise me if the helm/navigation seating are not finalized yet.

I have always loved this ep, due to the one time only look and feel of it. It just appears that it's not quite right, haha! The story is great and could have easily been a movie down the road. It kind of has a similar feel to" the cage", but with a bit less staleness. I watched on Netflix and enjoyed the new look of all the space shots...it is what it is.

I loved Sulu giving us "the mathematics" of it all...token Asian guy at work, ha!

Memory Alpha says Mitchell was at the helm and Kelso at navigation, so you're probably right. Maybe I don't know this show as well as I think -

Everyone in that chair before Chekov seemed to go crazy or have his brains boiled or some other such nonsense. I bet the crew dreaded new duty rosters, haha.
