Rodenberry liked jokes like that. I remember a similar story when he had Majel Barrett wait in his office and attempt to seduce some guy he had a meeting with. She worked her way into the guy's lap, then Gene burst in shouting "What's going on in here?!". After some nervous stammering from the poor guy, Gene started laughing and let him in on the joke.

I'm learning more and more about how wacky Gene was. I had no idea about the "casting couch" stuff until this thread.

Well, in Nichelle and Majel's case, it was reverse casting couch (they got the parts because they were already banging Big Gene).
However, at one point, Nichelle made him choose between her or Majel - and everybody remained friends. He didn't actually marry Majel until 1969 - and at least before that time, they had an "open" relationship, obviously, because he did not divorce his first wife until 1969 - they had been estranged for years before that.
I'm not sure if he actually settled down after marrying Majel, but he was notorious during the actual run of TOS.

And after he married Majel, he apparently made his assistant his mistress. However, I think he did settle down, sort of, in the 70s - just the 1 wife and 1 mistress - although he probably had flings, as available.

Anybody ever notice resemblances between this episode and Blade Runner?
Both bear curious similarities to the 1962 Sci Fi cheapie The Creation Of The Humanoids
Blade Runner especially has a strong resemblance to COTH -- including the "surprise ending" when the hero learns the truth about himself
Remember this is a 1962 movie. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep was published in 1968.

They started with 3 primary cast members as females, so there was less of a need, I guess.

Sort of like "Kirk flew over the cuckoo's nest" - in a way. However, we got great guest performances from James Gregory and Morgan Woodward.
Also, Marianna Hill (Dr. Helen Noel) was legit - and is a cousin of General Norman Schwarzkopf.

Meh. I thought the acting all round was fine. Dr. Noel's for sure legit. But the story and the plot were sorely lacking. Like they had this idea- "hey what if someone had a mind control device?" But they couldn't think of anything solid to do with it after that so they cobbled this story together and only managed to brush on the idea but not really explore it.
ETA: like they could have made Kirk go really insane then tried to commit him and keep him.

It always seemed to be a well-executed bad idea. Or maybe it was just an underdeveloped idea - the concept of mental illness/violent crime in the future had some promise, but, ultimately it was about a person of authority abusing institutional power and those under his care. Part of it was, in the 60s, the Nazi atrocities were still fresh in the public consciousness, and Adams' mind control experiments kind of smacked of that.
However, tough to believe when the guy had spent his life treating people would "break bad" in this manner.
However, I thought the acting, particularly of Woodward (Van Gelder), to be superb. (Woodward will return as a starship captain in "The Omega Glory".)

Trying to remember this one. I never did understand the working of the mind control machine. It made some people seem insane while others it just hurt. Then in the end it killed a guy.
Funny how Kirk is always the one that is effected the least.

Another Star Trek episode, another Star Trek babe. Hill was incredible. 
She was made to wear the TOS skirt.
I wonder what happened at the Christmas party. It didn't go as far as Kirk's neuralizer-unduced flashback, but enough happened that he was uncomfortable talking about it.
The first Vulcan mind meld. Great scene by both actors. Very compelling.
I would have liked to seen a sane Dr Van Gelder at the end, rather than just talking about him

Apparently he (Morgan Woodward) was physically and emotionally exhausted by the performances he gave. There was probably a small epilogue shot of him planned, but I don't know for sure. I've read he had to take a 4-day rest and recovery period after filming this episode.

That's what I'm talking about - the A story of that episode - obviously the B story was Cartman singing the Cheesy Poof song. That episode is called, "Roger Ebert Should Lay Off the Fatty Foods" - Roger Ebert was one of the constellations at the plane'arium (Because Dr. Adams - same character name as James Gregory's character in Dagger of the Mind couldn't say the "t" in planetarium).
ETA: And I don't know how fine of a distinction to draw between spoof and parody - it was one of those two.

Yes - the final shooting script called for Spock to touch Van Gelder's abdomen. Canon suggests that the touching is ritual and location is unimportant. It appears Spock prefers to touch the face and head, as he does for most physical melds. However, despite his human half, Spock is somewhat more advanced as he has achieved non touch melds with the Horta ("The Devil in the Dark"), and, in come cases from quite a distance ("A Taste of Armageddon" and "The Omega Glory" - also guest starring Morgan Woodward, although the meld in that episode was not with Woodward's character.)

One great scene was where Bones "pulls rank" on Kirk--basically telling him he has to follow through on his medical officer's advice whether he wants to or not. He then apologizes in a personal way as a friend.
