Star Trek: TOS Watchers - Season 1 Wrapup *Page 25*
Posted on 7/4/13 at 7:33 am

Let's start with -
Where No Man Has Gone Before
and we will follow the production order, skipping the 2 pilots:
Star Trek - TOS - Production Order
Let's plan on shifting episodes on Thursday and Sunday. I'll try to update the thread title as we go to guide people as to where the current discussion starts.
I know there was some interest in a couple of threads, so you don't have to check in now (but you can, of course).
So, your assignment now, should you choose to accept it, is to watch Where No Man Has Gone Before by Sunday, July 7 and come back here to discuss it.

I just fired up the ole television box to start my assignment.
And remember everyone: it's streaming on Netflix and Amazon Prime. Easy to find!

Netflix is this version, too.
And, to answer the earlier question - we're watching the entire series, in production order, including Spock's Brain.

I'm excited. Gonna be hard to limit myself to two a week. Its been a while since I've seen some of the episodes.
Been thinking of getting the Blurays. They're pretty cheap now. Any recommendations? I have the DVDs. I havent watched many of the new effects versions, and have heard mixed reviews.

I don't mind the new CGI inserts. Most are improvements, IMHO, particularly the orbital views of the planets. I'm watching on Netflix.

I've never got into Star Trek. But I've seen both of the new movies & really enjoyed them. I might get into this. Gonna have to find some time.

Will try to get into this myself. Hopefully this keeps going.

so clicking the "stream in HD" link for any movie on Solarmovie just creates a popup and sits there and does nothing, anyone know what I'm oing wrong?

oh yea. the standard def works fine, it's the "stream in HD" link that isn't working (would like to blow it up on the big screen).
I'll just have to stick with it on the comp monitor. Thanks for your help Kafka.

Alright here we go - Where No Man Has Gone Before.
A lot of visual differences from the balance of the series. Spock looks different, Spock and Scotty in beige, etc.
However, strong performances from guest cast, Gary Lockwood (of 2001: A Space Odyssey fame) and a young Sally Kellerman highlight the excellent acting that would pervade the series. I like the story about the contact lenses - Lockwood and Kellerman had to look down, under the contacts, to see. It gave them a haughty look which enhanced their appearance of superiority to the unaltered humans.
There was a high body count in this episode, 12, the most for the series. Kelso could be counted as the first "redshirt" although none of the onscreen deaths involved a crewman wearing a red shirt.
I always like that this one opens with Kirk and Spock playing tri-D chess.
The episode itself covers the theme of what it means to be human and the corrupting effects of power.
Another twist is the rather bloodthirsty attitude of Spock versus Mitchell, in contrast to Kirk who is desperate to save his old friend and crewman. This would be generally reversed in future episodes but it makes sense. Once Spock analyzed, logically, there was no alternative, he focused on the correct course of action. Kirk could not see that until it was almost too late.
