120hz Monitor, PSU, and Memory Oh My! (Questions)

Tvs are not the same technology. Your issue will be more with your gpu. At 1080 you will need to lower some settings to get 120 FPS probably. Most people I have seen playing at 120fps have dual GPU's.

I like my 60hz monitor just fine as do many many other users. As long as you get one with a decent refresh rate you'll be fine. Many of us see more value in higher resolution than refresh rate. While you can argue whether 120hz can be perceived, higher resolution is much more apparent.

newegg psu calculator recommends 530w, but I always err on the side of caution, especially as you can routinely find excellent deals on high wattage psus. 850 would give you plenty of room for another gpu if you wanted another. I highly recommend a modular psu as they make cable management a lot easier.

Regarding ram timings, they do improve performance, but often times you can overclock your ram in the bios to faster timings. I personally do not see a lot of use in spending a ton of money on ram for a gaming system. I would select anything 1600 and above that is $60 or less and made by a reputable brand such as patriot, corsair, g. skill, crucial, or mushkin.

personally, I have these samsung dimms that have been excellent. Got them for around $40 a set. Ram prices have bumped up a bit and now decent kits are going for around $55. You really won't see any noticeable differences between models at similar price points. you only need 8gb.

Also, do you plan on water cooling or anything? that can increase power draw and a lot of people say that if you are planning on SLI or water cooling then it is worth the one time investment to buy a nice high wattage psu than buy one now and again down the road. I know you're getting your feet wet but if you were dead set on that at some point then that would factor into my psu choice.

Its all about smoothness. Go watch the guys on twitch that stream bf3 at 60fps and tell me if your game looks that smooth. They're on 120hz monitors. It doesn't matter if you can physically see every one of the frames but what does matter is that you're seeing everything. If you play fps multiplayers then smoothness>pretty. That's the way I am anyway. I want maximum frames.

asus 144hz higher hz than the benq xl24 for about 100 cheaper. I'm getting that and adding another 7950 for bf4.

I'm really glad this question is being asked here. I've spent the last several days researching this very question. The common answer I seem find is that a mass majority of people think that 120hz means that you must be able to push 120fps or you are wasting your money. This is not the case at all. Here is a way to wrap your head around all this.

You have a 60hz monitor, it refreshes at 60 times a second, your video card is sending it say 80fps. This is more than your monitor can draw, thus you just lost 20frames of information and you get screen tear. Now, take the same 80fps and push it to a 120hz monitor, you will not miss any frames which equals smoothness.

Yes exactly the monitor im going to order next week. Probably the best gaming monitor for the money on the market. 1ms response time
I just need to figure out what video card i want. My gtx560 has served me well, but I want something that will carry me a few years...the titian is not an option.

You're 7950 can push 60+ in most games on high. I Have a 7950 as well and played played BioShock infinite on ultra at an average over 80. Bf3 on ultra is over 60 but I play on high. Oh and over clock that GPU. You can get 7970 performance out of it if you do.

Awesome! I plan on overclocking it. Do you know what the best overclocking numbers are for it? Im new to all of this so i dont know how i figure out the beat overclocking
