Any truth to this? (Regarding why cannon came to LSU)

A good friend of mine from high school was telling me about his grandfather and cannon. His grandfather is a cousin (maybe distant) of cannon's.

He played for alabama and Said that bama asked his grandfather to help recruit cannon and get them for on campus. Obviously he obliged.

So they were doing the who recruiting process thing and a cop arrested them for partying too hard. Pissed cannon off so bad that he chose to go to LSU.

Is this possibly accurate? Older folk, did cannon almost go to bama and get arrested there?

If true it's a cool story. If not, apologies.

Billy Cannon would never do anything to get in trouble with the law...

Billy Cannon Jr told me he went to AM over LSU because AM was paying more.

That could be it. This could strictly be grandpa talk... That's why I'm asking.

Billy got in trouble long time ago and before he got into high school.

It is my understanding that he was told by a local judge he would go to......

Alvin Roy was the catalyst for the success of the '58 national championship team because of his training methods...he had already implemented this with Cannon during high school and eventually with LSU...I do think this played a big part in his decision

As I told Billy Cannon himself, my father played at Istrouma on the 48-49 teams; little Fuzz had the starters work out at Alvin's in the summer of 49.

This is why Istrouma won the 50-51 state championships, that was years before Billy got to Istrouma.

It is while Billy is at Istrouma Alvin gives them the weights.

Billy lived 4 house down from my grandmother's house and used to play football and baseball on her fields while he was growing up.

Alvin's place was down the road from my grandmother's and between the next road over.

I thought Alvin Roy had something to do with it being his S and C coach at Istrouma and eventually at LSU. Alvin Roy and LSU was the first school to use weights in college football. Alvin Roy won the NC for LSU in 58.

The version of the story that I have been told is that Billy was going to attend Ole Miss. He and several others broke into the Manship home (former owner's of the Advocate Newspaper), and stole liquor and other items. Of course they got drunk were caught, and instead of serving time Billy was placed on house arrest which obviously kept him from going to Ole MIss.
