Then read this article. Interestingly enough, it was written before the draft and called Vaccaro our "most prized target" for draft night.

The article highlights Vaccaro's versatility and Roman Harper's limitations in coverage. It's long but a fantastic read.

Presnapreads.com

quote:

Ryan is going to bring a very aggressive approach to Louisiana. He may have slackened off from his blitzing with the Cowboys last season, but his overall philosophy is one of pressure and creating pressure from different areas of the field. Ryan isn’t being welcomed by high-quality pass-rushers in New Orleans, like he had in Dallas with DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer. Instead he will find a variety of different skill-sets and contributors who he will need to craft into a front seven capable of allowing his unit to compete.

Even though they could desperately use an outside linebacker to rush the passer or a three-down inside linebacker, the priority for the Saints is to re-tool and overrun and outmatched secondary. That process has already begun with the addition of Keenan Lewis, a former starter of the Pittsburgh Steelers who arrived in free agency. Lewis gives the Saints a leading cornerback, which will allow them to flip Jabari Greer to the second spot or mix-and-match him and Patrick Robinson depending on who they are trying to cover.

With the cornerback position improved, the Saints will be desperate to replace strong safety Roman Harper with a better player in space. Harper is an in-the-box safety who is awful in coverage. He is simply too slow to play in Ryan’s scheme and would be forced to blitz more often than is ideal. Even in Spagnuolo’s more passive approach, Harper rushed the passer 69 times last year, more than three times more than any other defensive back on the roster. With a player like that on the field, the Saints not only have a major liability in coverage, but they would be too predictable in an defense based on it’s unpredictability.

By the way, this website is pretty damn amazing. It's definitely for the thinking fan who wants to dig deeper into the Xs and Os of the game. There's some great articles on here, several about the Saints.

Disclaimer: I fully admit I was less than happy when hearing Vaccaro's named called on draft night. But within a few hours of perspective I was ok with it. After really looking at the pick objectively in the days following the draft, I actually fell in love with the pick. Obviously, the FO knows way more than we do and I'm excited to see what he brings to the table.

Great read. I was already sold on Vaccaro but showing how it will relate to Ryan's defense scheme was pretty neat.
I don't think anyone is mad about Harper having to sit the pine either especially after reading that

I was hoping for an olb. After researching Vaccaro I really started to like what I was reading and seeing. He can play and I can't wait to see him for the Saints.

Excellent read. I'm looking forward to seeing what Vaccaro can do. I believe we got a great player and one who will be in our defensive backfield for many many years to come. I'm excited about him. I'm still hurt by the fact that Victor Butler got hurt though

I LOVE THE SAINTS!

I remember when we got on the clock, all I could think about was Jones and finally having a legit OLB. After about 45 seconds, it kind of hit me, "When was the last time Saints picked a LB in the first?", hahaha. Regardless, can't wait to see Vaccaro play and great read.

Reading the article reaffirmed my belief that Harper is just not going to be able to play safety anymore, or at least take a lot of snaps. The game is just too spread out and fast for someone who can't cover adequately to be a starting safety.

That website is amazing. Also can't wait to see what Vaccaro & Jenkins can do if the CBs are half descent.

As big of a disappoint Jenkins has been so far, he has had to deal with playing with Harper. I'm not convinced he has the instincts to be a safety, but he might not be as terrible as we think, although he's most likely still terrible.

I thought he was pretty good in '11. But again, playing with others who are big liabilities curbs your potential.

11' was a good year for him. He was playing a lot of centerfield, singly high safety.

This is the most intriguing draft pick we've had since Reggie Bush. Leading up to the draft I thought Matt Elam would have been the better prospect, but after watching tape on Kenny... I'd be lying if I said I wasn't beyond excited to see him in Black and Gold. Can't wait for the preseason.

If he can cover TEs that seem to kill us game after game, then I'll consider it a pick well spent

Thanks for posting.

The writer did a great job of breaking down the secondary play. According to this guy, it seems Harper is the worse Safety to ever play in the NFL...he might be on to something!

I stuck my hand in the toilet last night and it was wet. You learn something new every day.
