Thoughts on Casillas

I consider Iker Casillas to be highly overrated and I'm not just saying this because he had a mediocre game today. He has been selected to the World XI five years in a row but is still fighting for the starting job on his own club team. His advantages are that he's a good leader and doesn't make stupid mistakes, but I feel like there are a dozen keepers in the world who are better at stopping difficult shots. I can't find any good save % stats, but my guess is that he would be well below Buffon, Neuer, and others. He is one of those athletes who has always been surrounded by talent and probably wouldn't receive the same recognition if he played for weaker teams.

The best stat sheet I could find was this page, which put him at 66% for 2012-13 (33/50) when he played a half season. Is there a soccer equivalent to baseball-reference somewhere?

ETA: Here is Tim Howard's for comparison.

Care to name them for us?

re: Thoughts on Casillas

I've always had a more difficult time judging keepers than pretty much any other position.

For example, I felt like Buffon should have done better on that Cavani goal while most of the board felt it was pretty much unstoppable.

And clearly some keepers (for lesser teams) are under much greater pressure than keepers for the truly elite teams.

If I remember correctly, someone posted something a while back which showed that Lopez' stats for Madrid this year were better than Casillas'. Even with something like save percentage though there are still a lot of variables, i.e. the "quality" of shots saved, etc.

I've always said I thought he was overrated, but there's just no way you can think of a dozen men who are better. At least I can't. I can't even get close to 12.

Casillas is a magnificent distributor. Literally one of the best in the world. People forget he's only 32, and only entering what should be his prime. There might be better pure shot stoppers, but Casillas has as close to a complete game than any other GK playing. He can handle, throw, kick, command an area, organize a defense, everything you want in a keeper. And the mental side of his game is superb. He's a once in a lifetime type of GK talent.

8 naked sheets in 19 matches coming off injury.

I also didn't mean to imply that Casillas should never be benched or that he is an automatic starter. He had a rather poor season by his standards this past year with Real, but there were mitigating circumstances (injury, falling out with Mourinho, etc). But overall, looking at his entire career, it's hard to deny that he isn't one of the best keepers of all time.

Reina had the same clean sheet percentage as Casillas. Tottenham's combination of keepers also had the same percentage.

I'm sorry. I didn't see your first post. Yes, GAA. I was wrong, though (.89).

I was just giving Cassillas the credit due to him. The guy is widely considered by many to be one of the top keepers in the game.

Like someone said earlier, he is a general. His futbol IQ is incredible, and he was nothing short of impressive in the WC.

Brazil just did what very few teams can do, and I think that speaks more of Brazil than less of Spain.

Oh I think he's incredible, I just shy away from the thought that most have that he's "easily" the best in the world. You can certainly make an argument, but I've seen way too many say its a no contest. In that sense, I think he's overrated.

I don't think it's undisputed at all. It's just a fact that Cassillas is in great company at his position.

Just curious, who do you think is the top keeper in the game?

Diego Lopez performed better than Casillas.
