So my pond is 3/4 of the way dug. What should I do b4 water for fish habitat?

fixed the link to the picture...its tough to see the dimensions because its not complete. Once he grades out the edges it will be sloped out another 4-5 feet to the edge.

I would suggest making "T"s with large concrete culverts.

I don't know if that fits into your budget, as I'm sure cement culverts get pricy. You would want to put these cement "T"s in the deepest part of the pond.

Also, you would want to make tree like structures that are built to last longer. Probably be best to put them closer to the banks of the pond.

Read a book about pound building by Ray Scott.

Plant you some cypress trees about 5 foot from the bank

A couple of things: if putting in natural trees use cypress and cedar they will last much longer.

PVC structures with lots off vertical pipes on a flat base make good structure and are easy to pull hooks through. Also it will be unlikely to get hung up on unlike wood. Will look like a big version of the bottom rack in a dishwasher.

Creating a deep hole 1-3 ft deeper than surrounding with a covered "roof" area will provide a home in hot summer months. Put it where you can cast parallel to it when fishing in 3-5 ft of water. The cover should be shapped like a short legged table. Old cedar fence panels doubled stacked and wrapped with aluminum wire to keep boards intact work well. Place this on a short bed frame sort of thing made from 4x4 about 18" off the bottom. Could make a more permenant version out of concrete by building frame and pouring a thin slab.


Stacks of pallets vertically with every other one turned 90 degrees so open sides are off setting make nice deep water structure. Run a piece or two of rebar down through them and into the bottom to secure. You can off set some to create small ledges on a vertical structure. Bait fish hide them.

Tallow will work for structure but may not last as long as other wood.


Sand in shallow areas is solid advice. Make it 2-4 inches deep.

Pier before fill is a good idea too with hinged fishing holes cut in deck where deepest shade will be.

Chunk rock bank on east side will warm earlier in spring.and hold crawfish. May bee too expensive though.

A PVC fence line is another good idea from deep to shallow water .

Since you're filth rich, set some upright power poles or pipes that can be used for building an over-the-water gazebo or dock or something. Will double as fish shelter and increase enjoyment.

Put a winding ditch about 3 feet deeper than the surrounding area down through the center. Bass will congregate in the deeper water in the summer. Have it winding so it helps to create ambush points.
