The hospital can have been in the works for years AND Shaq can say that he plans to build one...the two aren't mutually exclusive. As someone who has worked closely with development offices in higher education, I've found that many (most) major gift donors think the idea is their's...and in a way it is, it's just that it was also the idea of the institution they're giving their money to. Really skillful major gift officers have a way of making the donor think it's all their idea anyway.

That said, I think this is awesome. I hope the project is hugely successful.

Yeah this doesn't say outright that it was his idea. They probably were having trouble with the funding and exposure for the project. Somebody let's Shaq know about it and he tries to get in to help out. It is then his plan also to build the school with money and get exposure to it.

So asking who is gonna pay for this is Republicanism? It seemed like a reasonable question to me.

The state is broke. I'd also like to know how the "free" services are going to be paid for. It's one thing to donate x dollars to build the hospital, but the yearly bill is going to be the obstacle.

But, whats a couple more billion a year in Democratism...

"How much of the bill is Shaq footing? It sounds like his name will be on the building and operated by OLOL. The "free" comment is troubling. Nothing is free.

Who pays for the costs to operate the facility and health care costs? It sounds to me like either the state or John Q. Public. I doubt Jindal agrees to spend state funds for this and I'm 100% against John Q. Public's monies used for this.
"

Look at the models of St. Judes and Shriners. Care is FREE to the patient insurance is accepted and processed. Both manage very well with government monies.

Thanks Shaq for making us all proud alumini!!!!

Toms and Sutton were major driving forces behind the Sutton Children's Hospital in Shreveport at Schumpert. I am around healthcare daily and have been for 20 years. My child was born with some issues, and I can say we got the best care by great surgeons and nursing for his care and aftercare that I could imagine. Spectacular. While not free, it was an amazing facility and I can only think the millions generated by the two golfers free it up to provide better care without so many budgetary concerns.

My two cents.

Shaq Daddy is a beautiful human being.
I hope he builds a Childhood obesity fitness/nutritional Preventive Medicine wing for overweight kids as that is a passion of his. There is nothing like that in Baton Rouge. I will be happy to get my checkbook out for His Shaqphonic.

So if Dr. Shaq can pull this off then some will remember him as a great athlete. But I think more people will remember him as a great humanitarian the same as Danny Thomas is with St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. Man! What a legacy. I'll make a pledge.

so many athletes that achieve the level of fame and fortune that he has, become elitist, and try to distance themselves from whence they came, Shaq is truly one classy dude
