Recovering drug addicts and alcoholics of the OT, what keeps you sober?

Are you big into AA or NA? What changes did you make in your life?

Not one myself, but after knowing a few, they all say being around good company helps.

I got my doctor to prescribe me drugs to stay calm and slightly buzzed so I don't need illegal drugs anymore.

And this:

It's almost impossible to stop using if you still hang out with users.

I stay away from drama and people who bring it. I've focused on my career and I have an SO that has zero tolerance for any of my BS and a son. Before that I had nothing to care about. Fear of losing family and a job I've worked my arse off for have kept me sober since '06. Surrounding myself with positivity has been essential.

so the only thing that has changed is that you're using prescriptions instead of illegal drugs. nice.

re: Recovering drug addicts and alcoholics of the OT, what keeps you sober?

I have not been to an AA meeting in may years. I kind of feel guilty about it because they saved my life years ago and I should give back.

Now:

I am responsible for keeping myself sober.

I don't drink, no matter what -- no excuses.

I remember what it was like toward the end and I do not ever want to go back to where I was years ago.

I do not think I have the stamina to drink the way I used to - and don't care to find out.

I found that I can make people laugh even sober.

I have a number of friends who are retired Marines. I joked about ordering a Dewars on the rocks one day after golf. I was told that I would never get the glass to my mouth as my arm would be broken in several places. They smiled as they said it, but I wouldn't test them. It's good to have friends who support my sober lifestyle.

I am pretty sure I would lose my clearance if in my next subject interview I had to admit that I began drinking again.

If I ever feel the compulsion to drink again I know I can walk into an AA meeting pretty much any time of the day or night.

Don't know about all that but I guess I may have a gambling problem.

Good thing is I get a lot of comps.

Bad thing is I called the hotel for my free room and accidentally dialed the "gambling problem" number they have right next to reservations instead.

I realized what I'd done when the lady asked me if I had a gambling problem?

I said, "well, yeah, if I get dealt two sevens, should I split those?"

She said she couldn't answer my question, so yeah, I've got a gambling problem.

Good company has certainly been one of the best helps. Good friends, loving family, etc.

If I get a bad enough craving, Coca-Cola or juice helps.

I was pretty bad off. I can only imagine.

That's awesome you have friends like that.

That's a damn good feeling.

AA is critical at least in the beginning for me. I try to go but not daily or even weekly anymore. I still read the big book. All the other advice is critical also...friends, hobbies family etc. I was lucky to have a pretty high bottom.

An excellent strategy is to let people know who will kick your arse if they find you using again. Like you said, you have to keep yourself sober, but it's nice to have people watching your back.

If everyone could be this rational, there'd be a frick of alot less junkies out there. the teetotalar route has almost 0% effectiveness

I employ the same method

People, outdoor activities. I got married the last time basically in an effort to help get sober and doing things outdoors and my family give me reasons to stay sober. I'd probably be dead in a year if I start again.

Exactly! The only problem with taking illegal drugs is that they are illegal, they are expensive and sometimes you can't get them for a few hours/days so you feel like shite until you get them again. With a doctors prescription all of those issues go away, at least in my situation.

Lsu480 I'd much rather go that way but how to get a Dr to prescribe you that?

What are you prescribed?
