Based on what I've seen and read, it looks promising but it needs to be treated like an alpha. The game is still very incomplete and missing a ton of features.

Honestly, I dont think the game is that bad. I think its excellent for an alpha

I have a lvl 8 water mage and a lvl 4 ranger. Fun as hell, and I only played solo. The constant exploration is great as well as always looking for stuff to upgrade your character. I've been hoping for a drop of pet food to get either the healing pet or the tank pet (turtle). Every other pet is useful, but these two seem to be the most desirable.
The classes are pretty balanced except for the bugs. But this is the alpha test, so things like that should be evened out over time. Don't expect to kill the boss monsters right away either. At lvl 8 (and about 6-7 hours of play) I am just able to solo some of them.
So far, great game for $20, and I expect it to get better. Climbing up a mountain and hang gliding off of it never really gets old.

Besides that is there any story whatsoever ?
If that is all the game is I will get bored quick and will pas on it.

Nope. Not yet, anyway. I don't know if they plan for any story, but being that each world is randomly generated, I wouldn't think there will be much story. The fun is in the exploration and leveling / upgrading.

Yeah. Sounds like I will be sitting out of this one.
I can't even play a game like Skyrim because the story sucks so bad. I get bored fast and just lose any desire to log back in and play.

When I've not playing it, I've been thinking about playing it. When a game does that to me, I know it's a good game for me.
Also, staying up later than normal to play a game, for me, is a marker of one that grabs me by the hoo hah.
Not for everyone, but I love it.

Any idea when the beta or official version is coming out? I don't know about investing in something that won't be tried and true down the road.

Don't know. I expect it to have a Minecraft development cycle since it is pretty much being done by 2 people.
I am not sure but the $20 might be all you ever pay.
