I'd try boiling PBW soak.
Well I know that PBW has sodium carbonate in it but I think it has other stuff as well and I am not sure what that is.

Wouldn't this be akin to scrubbing your cast iron skillet with steel wool, soap n water? You would need to re-season. So in the case of the barrel, pour whiskey in and let it soak into the wood.

Well at this point I am looking to get rid of anything left in the barrel. The whiskey flavor is long gone and I assume it has been replaced with bacteria that I do not want. So anything that will strip the barrel of stuff living in the wood is on the table.

I guess what I was trying to say is why not put a couple of handles of whiskey in and sanitize the barrel as well as give it a new lease on whiskey life.....Kill 2 birds. #Ilovebirds

What about dosing it with a shite ton of campden tablets.

I am not sure I want the whisky anymore and that is fairly expensive

that is step 3 of the process. First is sodium carbonate, then citric acid, then campden

This is what I might do first before putting whiskey back in there. Not like I don't have 100 campden tablets sitting around here.

If your beer turned out like vinegar then you probably have an acetobacter infection. Acetobacter eats and breaks apart alcohols so you probably don't want to throw more whiskey on top of it.
I would try to swing the PH of the barrel in succession a few times. Fill with a starsan solution which should be sub 3 PH, then PBW (don't know the PH offhand), then back to starsan.
I would feel more comfortable with this knowing that all the chemicals involved are food/beer/yeast safe.
ETA:
I wonder why they recommend citric acid.. I feel like lactic and phosphoric acid are a lot more common in brewing.

I'm just pulling this stuff out of my arse too. I'm a damn genius.
I'd say an extremely hot PBW process. Then a pretty strong starsan solution. Then campden tab overdose.

What we're shooting for tomorrow.

Good luck
We need to setup a FBD homebrew competition. Pick a single style for everyone to brew but allow for "interpretations" of the style and not be so worried about style guidelines.

Thank you. We'll need it. Ours are certainly outside of the guidelines.

Everyone can send their beer to my place and I'll tell you which one I like best.

Friday night in the brewery
100% Brett Hoppy Wheat, down to 1.011 from 1.060, racked 1 gallon onto 1.5 lbs of strawberries, the remaining 4.5 gallons are getting the 1st rd of dry hopping

We speak complexly because we know we are in good company. It can be as simple as cooking a soup. It's really not all that complicated. Homebrewerers make it that way.
