Haven't seen Belly in years and just now realized that's the movie he puts on in the beginning. Is there any background to this or just something random? From what I know there doesn't seem to be much connection between Hype Williams and Gummo.

I never got the connection either, but I saw Belly before Gummo. I didn't know what Gummo was till like a few months later when a few of my black friends made me watch it. So I'm just kind of wondering if Gummo became an iconic cult film for black people seems like they were always on the underground stuff before we are

ETA: and what better movie to make fun of all of us than Gummo.

Own both movies. I think they put it in as a way to say "look at these white people" they're so dysfunctional.

How did I know you would be one of the first people in a Belly thread

It is a really strange movie to pick though, i couldn't stand Gummo. I can't imagine the targeted Belly audience being big fans either

Pretty much my take as well. We just knocked over a nightclub for mad loot, but hey, white people way crazier.

Yeah, it doesn't seem like it's a movie aimed at that demographic, but I can tell you I've never asked a black person if they've seen Gummo and had them say no. At least none in my age range.
