401k What is a good rate of return?

Really depends on inflation. Be aggressive young, but do it in an educated manner. Stupid=/=aggressive.

Good return for 1 year? 10 years? 40 years?

Also, you said you wan to be aggressive, but do you know how aggressive? Are you a 80/20 or 90/10? Not a huge difference, but important none the less. Make sure you do a profile on yourself to figure exactly what your allocations should be.

80% equities or 90% equities. Just varying degrees of an aggressive allocation.

9-10 used to be the target for most

I think a reasonable target nowadays is 8-ish....pessimistic target would be 6, and optimistic target would be 10.
