I read that too. I think Anderson is confusing his potential and reality with regard to BJ.

Penn should be honored. Obviously, you can't call him the GOAT based on record or his accomplishments lately, but this guy has fought a whos who and is one of the more brave fighters I've ever seen. Guy will fight anyone. There are a lot of fighters now that refuse opponents, weigh their options or duck people. Penn would have fought any of his "friends" and taken the check to the bank.

I was a big time Prodigy fan. He was my favorite fighter for about an 8 year span. Always felt he was better than Matt Hughes and GSP, just lacked conditioning. Underrated striker with godly BJJ.

His frame was always going to be tough to overcome. He's beaten by guys that outweigh him and was pulled out of LW by a much faster guy. Penn was never super athletic or able to be the bigger stronger guy. IMO, he fought uphill constantly. I think the conditioning and training aspects of his deficiencies are overrated. If improved, they wouldn't have equated to enough to change many of his losses in the end.
He might've beaten GSP the 1st time, Hughes the 2nd time, and that's about it.

You can say pretty much all of that about Sonnen, too. Losing to the best doesn't make you the best, though.

Who ya got? I'm sorry, but I have trouble ranking the originators too highly, because the field was so much weaker back then. The top fighters are much more diverse now, so the dominance of Silva and GSP is hard to argue.

I think I'd still put Couture up there for his body of work. GSP is incredible, but I don't think his particular skills are as strong as some other fighters.

This is short-sighted.
Penn knocked off Hughes whilst being widely considered the GOAT in the WW division and in his prime. He held TWO UFC titles in different eras in different weight classes.
Sonnen and Penn WOULD have been very similar had he finished the AS fight and Jones' broken toe been discovered in time.
Think about the difference here.
