Upgrading internal parts on a 1911

Picked up a Colt 01991 this weekend and am interested in upgrading some of the internal parts. I'm looking at Ed Brown parts. My gunsmith is a fan of 10-8 products. What's the OB's opinion on brands for upgrading parts?

I have used Brown, Wilson, 10-8, Harrison, and EGW parts in all my pistols.
Since you didn't specify which parts you were thinking of changing its hard to say for sure.
In my exp, gunsmiths like using brown b/c they are easier to fit(less oversized) then others
In my Colt 1991, I changed the following:
Briley Barrel
EGW bushing and plug
EB slide stop
EB HC hammer
EB HC slide stop
EB perf sear and disconnector
10-8 Rear Sight
novak big dot front
Harrison solid trigger
EB Tactical mag release
EB Ext thumb Safety
EB Grip Safety
I have 3 other colts with upgraded internals, and I have used pretty much every brand out there. You really can't go wrong sticking with the ones I have mentioned.

This may be a new record for longest time a 1911 thread has been up without KR posting in it.

Still waiting on KR... I have quite a few Wilson parts in my 1911. Night and day difference.. I wish I had some experience with the other brands to help but before KR comes and says dont buy Wilson stuff ill say they have my vote

this, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with any of the other brands that you mentioned....they are all VERY similar.

Why buy a high end gun like a colt and then change all the guts out?

because there is better out there, colts are not hand fitted custom 1911's.
......and yes we know you like loose sloppy guns.

Wait, is it broken? Shoot it first and then see what breaks, replace broken parts with better ones.
FWIW, I didnt change anything on my Glock 17.

Most people see the name Colt and go to creaming themselves. This is the lowest end Colt built. This part is obviously not directed to KR - I'm going for a certain look (mil-spec) but want it to run like a target model.

I remember your "sleeper" 1911 thread.

I purchased the rear sight and trigger you have listed

It was an honest question. Seems like itd be better to buy a frame and slide and guts seperatly or a really cheap gun and put high end guts in it. .
I know nothing of these things.

Because you would have more time/money into fitting the frame and slide than it is to buy a cheaper working 1911 and go from there.
That being said it still wouldnt be as "good" as a full custom but it would be close.
Ill take a Wilson/Nighthawk in 9mm please.

You should upgrade the frame to polymer.

here's a pic of my 1991, you'll like the 10-8 rear, and i prefer solid triggers with smooth faces..

Downshift I hope you didn't take any offense to my response - I didn't mean to sound curt. Basically the 1911 I bought is the cheapest Colt made. I bought it because it retains the characteristics of a traditional GI 1911. An $850 Colt is nowhere near the quality of a top shelf Colt. Someone else stated that what you really want is a quality slide to frame fit to start with as your building block or foundation. I have that with the Colt I purchased. The barrel of the pistol I bought will be fine as well. However, better quality component parts do exist - as Chrisman17 listed above.

That's a sexy bitch right there. Thanks for sharing those pics.

Save your money for ammo. You'll do better putting 2,000 rds through it than switching out parts on a brand new gun.

Thx, but I'm covered in that department.
