Pelicans are planning to make an offer to Chris Copeland

LINK

quote:

Chris Copeland will be a restricted free agent beginning on Monday and according to Marc Berman of the New York Post, the New Orleans Pelicans are planning to make a substantial offer to the forward.

The Knicks can only pay Copeland up to $3.1 million next season, so the Pelicans will get him if the first year in an offer sheet exceeds that amount.

Thoughts? I wouldn't mind this move, but only if Monty can get him out of the Knick's "shoot first, ask questions later" mentality.

$3.1M seems like a lot for him, even in a front-loaded year

PER 36 looks good.

Stats on Copeland

"Substantial offer"? What does that mean. If its more than 3.1-ish per year...wtf.

Although Dell has done a good job of finding guys in the past.

Dude is 29 years old. I don't see how he's going to improve much.

Apparently the Knicks don't have his bird rights so can't spend more than 3.1 on him. He played one year for them and several years overseas. He's 28.

He's a bit of a SF/PF tweener but is a very good outside shooter and can play inside in small ball lineups.

He was an essential bench player late in the season for the Knicks.

Sounds like he's right up our alley, actually.

His stats look good. I don't think he's the long term answer, but he may be a good guy to bring in this year and maybe draft one of the many SFs next year to groom.

Apparently he played well when given the chance and improve significantly in his time overseas.

I guess Dell looks at the Per 36 and other analytics and thinks it will translate.

Seems like another player of a particular type that Dell loves: worked hard, earned a spot in the NBA, performed well in limited minutes, isn't a star but does things well, will be willing to play hard and come to a small market, won't break the bank and will have a flexible deal.

But what about Anthony Bennett?

He's the best shooter on the Knicks. I would love to bring him in for 1-2 years.

Copeland the ''X Factah''

It'd be stupid for this story to be leaked by the Pelicans unless we weren't actually interested in Copeland. This has to be agent speak for "Let the bidding war begin!" It could also come from the Knicks, make us pay more out of spite since we are trying to take a player they have limited matching rights to. Either way, exaggerating our offer seems to be in the interest of the potential leaker.

Copeland is a floor spacer with length. Seems like just the kind of player we'd want to add and fits the Demps MO, perfectly because he wasn't on any of our radars. We should start a thread ranking the players we'd never consider.

He can shoot the three, but he doesnt do anything else. Nothing wrong with that, but I doubt they are thinking of doubling his mpg and turning him into a starter. They sign him and bring back Aminu and that combines for a reasonable sf

hmmm

I think I really like this move

Solid rotation guy. Brings a nice scoring punch off the bench. Can play some 3. Would be a decent contract.

I like

Obviously it wouldn't be leaked by us. But it does seem like a guy right in Dell's wheelhouse. Would possible accept a deal with team options in multiple years.

And the problem with a list that puts the players we least expect on...Dell will find the players we next least expect.

re: Pelicans are planning to make an offer to Chris Copeland

I just realized he's only got one year of experience in the league so "substantial offer" means Gilbert Arenas Provision Poison Pill offer a la Asik and Lin. However, the Knicks are screwed because of the taxpayer limitations on them.

quote:

The first-year salary in the offer sheet cannot be greater than the Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level exception

LINK

So basically the Hornets don't have to offer him a Poison Pill offer, they just have to offer something like 3/$12 and the Knicks can't match because they are limited to the Taxpayer MLE.

ETA: They may be able to go full MLE because of Jason Kidd retiring and JR Smith being likely to opt out would get them under the Tax Apron that changes the MLE. However I don't think the Knicks will renounce their rights to Smith and most teams keep retired player contracts floating around as trade chips, so they probably will be limited to the Taxpayer MLE for matching.

I would think signing him means the Marion/13 trade is a non-starter. It would also lead me to believe Bennett is 100% not going to be the pick.

Come on, Jester... Obviously you realize there is a difference in drafting someone at 6, and signing a role player.

Not too bad on the salary, but I'd want the last year to be a team option.
