Air pollution may have led to fewer hurricanes, study finds

LINK

quote:

We show that anthropogenic aerosols lowered the frequency of tropical storms over the twentieth century. However, sharp declines in anthropogenic aerosol levels over the North Atlantic at the end of the twentieth century allowed the frequency of tropical storms to increase.

I knew it was the EPA's fault.

no. It's that fictional global warming's fault.

Can you not get on the media train and stop using your car and hair spray?
TIA

We've continued to have active and hyperactive seasons for years now in the tropical Atlantic. And anyone that believes we can accurately determine something like this over the span of 150 years of record keeping us simply incorrect.

Now if they used data gathered from soil and ice samples as the basis for this study, then they have my attention but I don't see the full text for viewing. Is there another link where I can read the full report?

How did they have storms pre-Industrial revolution if man wasn't polluting the air?

next time i rent a car, they should have an option to pay me for the carbon emissions that offset tropical storms

I posted a link on a forum where scientists hang out. If someone has a copy of the study I might be able to get them to post it to a drop box. If so, I can post a link for you and info on how to join and retrieve it, but I make no promises.

We really can't make an apples to apples comparison before the Space Age.

Last year, ottothedumb was crowing on the poli board because we had a "record" number of named storms in June. Of course, two of them never came near land. We never would have known those storms existed before the late 1950s/early 1960s. And we don't even have records from the pre-industrial era.

This study has been brought to you by the good people at Dow Chemical!

This is not in defense of his statement but we don't judge seasons based on landfalling storms, we judge seasons based upon Accumulated Cyclone Energy, or ACE. If we based season activity on simple landfalls, many years would be considered busts by those standards.

I found someone who has a copy of the paper and will get it to me. Once I have the paper I will let you know through this thread, if you are still interested in reading it.
