And what a shame, since high rollers like you were ready to bankroll a more expensive hire.

Yes because of a cigar.
LSU won't make a hire who will immediately piss off the fans, piss off TAF, and threaten season ticket sales, when there are candidates who are equal to or better than him.
Add to the fact that he's got some issues with unfiled taxes related to a business he had and the guy may never smell an SEC job again.
Just too much risk and too much baggage.

I get your point but in January of 2005, tubberville was more qualified than any other guy on that list plus I feel he really wanted the lsu job

It probably would have pissed off alot of people but I think tub could have maintained what Saban had going and added more championships (not that les hasn't done well)

The fact that Les Miles was the best (matter of opinion...I think Petrino is a better coach) of that list means Bertman needed to cast a wider net.

I wasn't impressed with the Miles hire at the time, but compared to the others, it makes sense now.

For better or worse, I think he felt his hands were tied in that he needed to hire at least a somewhat established major college coach. Given that criteria, there wasn't really much of a wider net available to cast, at that point.

I think he would have done about the same as Les.

what? So fisher would have won the sec twice abd a bcs championship? he cant do that at FSU, a school in a weak arse conference that perennialy out recruits LSU and the majority of other sec schools. you got to be kidding rt?

I'm not saying I want either of those guys, but its a little silly for everyone to pretend they know how those coaches would have done at LSU with all the resources we have and where the program was in 2004.

I don't believe Miles would have two SEC titles and a NC if he had gone to Ole Miss or Arkansas.

the only reason u take saban back, is so hes not at another sec school. the 3 out of 4 has a lot to do with the school hes at. he never sniffed that at LSU. LSU and any other sec school would never have been given a rematch.

He's been the HC at FSU for 3 seasons now and does have an ACC title and BCS bowl win. They had a disappointing season in 2011 in part because Manuel got hurt.

It was January, the hottest names, Meyer and Spurrier had already taken jobs.

Since we're playing Hypotheticals: who would you have preferred in 1987--Steve Spurrier, Mike Shanahan, Mack Brown, or Mike Archer?

none of the above because Bobby Bowden would not have left after the 86 season and would have still been the coach.

Saban announced on Christmas he was leaving. I'll never understand why the frick he had to do it then.

This, combined with him going to Alabama, and having his acceptance press conference on the day of the Sugar Bowl when we destroyed ND (when we were the only game that day) are reasons I cannot forgive him.

He is such an asshat I hope he dies a painful death.

Clearly you're letting emotion get in the way of logical thinking. Spurrier has turned SC into an annual SEC title contender, and has done it in a state with crappy talent overall. Spurrier would've had unbelievable success here with our recruiting base.
