It's a little bit bleaker, and sets up for a sequel.

I like this ending so much more than what they did.

They didn't have to go as far as they did in some places, out the general outline was so much better.

This had to be part of the script that Aintitcoolnews read when they proclaimed it to be one of the best film scripts they read and that it would be a genre changer.

This movie did have an I am legend/war of the worlds with Tom Cruise abrupt ending. But it does set up for a sequel/TV series. But let's face it, it's hard to come up with an ending for a zombie movie. The alternative to a happy ending, would have been a bleak one where there is no hope ala Dawn of the dead.

I don't really see where the ending they went with sets up all that well for a sequel. *Spoilers* The zombies have basically been rendered nonthreatening since they just leave everyone who has had the treatment alone. I guess there's the rebuilding after the war, but the main threat is gone.

Sequel is very unlikely. But possible if they go into the whole other ppl and their struggles during said events of this movie. More likely would be a show maybe ala walking dead expounding on some of themes and characters I have heard of from the book. Plus it's Hollywood, they can always make something up.

Pretty much.

They could have done a lot more future wise with the previous script.

The brilliant bean counters spent 50 million dollars on top of the finished product they already had to hire a different person to rewrite the script, and reshot a third of the movie, only to make an inferior product that they can get less out of.

What struggles?

The book made a point of collecting stories of their experiences of the war.

The original script took place over months, and had zero resolution to the threat.

This script goes from main outbreak to camo vaccine in a week.

Who can't hole up for that long?

That sounds like an absolutely terrible ending and I can completely see why they decided to rewrite and reshoot it. Like the article says, that ending sounds completely weird and not inline with the rest of the movie.

You try holding up from a zombie invasion for a week, without turning. See how that works out!
