World War Z Review Thread ****(Book and Movie Spoilers)**** BOOK READERS THREAD
Posted by PsychTiger on 6/21/13 at 1:26 am00
Just got home from seeing it. It had some good action but overall I was disappointed.
*****Spoilers begin below*****
I thought it was going pretty well until the zombies managed to climb the wall and overrun Israel. Got more ridiculous and lost any resemblance to the book from that point forward. I also thought the solution that saved everyone (Remember, SPOILERS) was kind of lame with the zombies leaving you alone if you had some disease or terminal illness. The zombies lose their fear factor at that point and it just becomes a menial task to eliminate them. Seemed like a cop out to me. Oh well, time for bed.

That is funny for many reasons, though I won't name them. Those who know, know.
*Edited to further increase vagueness. Can't be too careful.

Hodor?
This is not going well. Not that I care but some are sensitive.
I don't really remember zombie animals in the book, but if animals transmit the virus then humans would have no chance.

No zombie animals in the movie. It's not THAT bad.

I was disappointed to see the mass cgi zombies in the trailers. I will have to accept that it's just another zombie movie and not to expect it to follow any of the book.... Is it? Is the movie anything at all like the book?
The mass of cgi zombies just made it look like they're going the "bigger, badder, better" route.

Not saying I don't want to see it, that just have me that impression and I know to go into movies not expecting the book.

So if having a disease is key for survival then due to STD's most of the zombies will be over the age of 70, no?

I was bummed when I saw this too. Looks nothing like the book. They never describe Z's in the book as fast and athletic. I think it had the potential to be a great movie, but it looks like Hollywood shite the bed again. BUT, I'll have to reserve judgement until I see it I guess.

They seemed very insect-like. Like if you kick an ant hill. I thought that had the potential to be cool, but they may have gone overboard.

I think it would work much better as a miniseries on HBO or even AMC given their success with The Walking Dead.
As for similarities to the book, the disease is mentioned early on as rabies with news coverage from South Africa, Israel does quarantine itself early on, and you see the US Governemnt take to the oceans for safety. You see a nuclear explosion as Pitt is airborn traveling from one place to another during his investigation, but there is no clear indication of who the warring parties are. Brad Pitt's character is an investigator, but instead of interviewing people after the war he is actively trying to find the cause of the zombie outbreak and how to stop it.

I have marked spoilers, so to answer your question, The disease has to be something considered fatal (AIDS would work I guess if you want an STD), which the zombies can somehow sense and then leave you alone as you would not be a good host to help spread the zombie virus/bacteria/whatever it is.
They used syphilis/hepatitis or something like that I think and infected people to the degree the zombies could sense it but the syph/hep/whatever itself would not really kill you. I guess zombies are smart enough to know you are ill, but not smart enough to discern the true fatality of your illness.

Just saw it (fan of the book too).
Not sure how I feel about it, which considering how I usually feel walking out of movies is a pretty bad sign for it.
Rambling thoughts:
1) How many production company logos did they use? I know it was in development hell forever but frick I was starting to expect a roaring lion highlighted with searchlights while stars flew around it with a castle in the background to close it all out.
2) I feel like one needs to be high to fully appreciate the intro.
3) Props for having the entire prezombie portion of the movie to be the trailer.....no need to have long setup.
4) Booo at the 28 days later conversion rate....how exactly is it supposed to spread via airport hubs? I do think the speedier zombies were done as well as possible.
5) Sorry, but the entire notion of the zombies avoiding terminally ill humans is absurd and degrades the entire premise.
6) You frickers, I wanted more references. They had the really subtle Pakisan/Iran exchange (draw a great circle line in your head between SK and Isreal.....) and the Isreali, but I wanted to have something along the lines of the Tiger of New Delhi or the Redekler plan. I wanted to see an analogue of Yonkers, which unless I'm mistaken, has never been done in a zombie film.
7) I thought the noncommittal pseudo-ending was pretty comical. "Yeah.....we don't know how this is going to play out money wise, so here is an open ended finale that still gives a modicum of closure."
8) I couldn't help but laugh out loud at Pitt's expression to the Doctor's rambling waxing eloquent of his life's passion. Dude seemed to have a few screws loose. Couldn't decide if the humor was intentional or not.
9) I wanted Pitt to die with the injection, but still proving the concept of protection (If they had to go the route of that anyway). Thought it would have gone a long way towards salvaging this film. Which brings me to my last point:
10) I think the biggest problem is that it failed to draw me in completely. I was merely a spectator, I really didn't care what happened.

I've read that the zombies basically just want to spread the disease instead of wanting to eat everyone. Thanks to the PG-13 rating I guess.

It's too bad HBO didn't pick this up instead for a miniseries. Battle of Yonkers.
