What size shot for home defense?
Posted by LouisianaChessie on 6/20/13 at 7:12 pm00
I've always had shotguns and loaded them up with whatever I had hunted lately but I picked up a shotgun the other day for home defense and was going to put some specific shells in it for its intended purpose.
I live in an apartment and I'm sure these walls are paper thin so I currently have some highbrass 7.5s.
What do you have in your shotgun(s) at home?
What would you suggest for my scenario?

I was digging around in my bag and forgot I bought several boxes of 3" Ts for a white goose hunt. Thought man this will do the trick... I'm a little afraid of shooting through the walls with some bad A steel shot though.

I have 7.5 in my 12 ga pump with the plug removed right next to my bed along with my.45 for back up.
The way our home is set up a fire fight would hit my kids rooms if i were to fire just out our bedroom door. I have tested my shells at our camp with 2 sheets of sheetrock and at 20ft it did not go through the second sheet, but did the first pretty much.

Would be no question at my parents house because there's nothing to worry about but in these little college town apartments I think that buckshot might rip these walls up...

I live in an apt too and I use buckshot number 3.

At close range (10' or so) bird shot will no spread very far and will be like a slug. Course this also means it will penetrate wall. So just soon go with buckshot of your choosing.

Interesting theory. My thought is that it would go through the wall but wouldn't be deadly if using something like 6 or smaller

In an apartment, would a 20 gauge be better?
If it ain't lethal after two sheets of sheetrock, will it be lethal hitting a bad guy?
Now he won't be happy about it. Hell I've hit squirrels with 6 shot and they kept truckin. Now that was at a distance not 10'. I would get some sheetrock and ammo and do your own testing to see what works. There are plenty of you tube videos also.

Not sure about better, but would do the job.
When i decided to change loads in my shotgun i saw on tv where some guys were testing fine shot and saying it was much safer when you have others in the home and that the smaller loads were more than enough to do the job, so i tested itmyself and they were right. And those of you that don't think it's enough, try shooting a watermelon at 20ft and see for yourself, i did and was surprised i admit.
