I don't think I'm being all that pessimistic, given our injury record the last couple of seasons. Full strength I think we have the best squad in England. Mentally I think we've turned a corner after the 8-2 Man U game. Tactically Wenger has shown more variation than I can remember. We are damn good. We can actually defend set pieces fairly well and our goalkeeping is improving. I don't see a team in Europe that we couldn't beat with this group of players.

But Injuries are the part of the game that no one can control. We've had some of the worst luck when it comes to injuries since 2006 that I've ever seen. What other team suffered 3 double leg fractures in 4 years? Diaby and Eduardo have never been the same, and if the fans had their way Ramsey would have been shipped off last year. Not only that we've had nagging muscle injuries that come from players being overplayed for club and country.

Look at a list of our injuries so far.
I don't see how there is any way we can get close to full strength, if the current rate of injuries hold, especially given that the Christmas run in will include games in four competitions if we make it past Chelsea in the COC. This isn't an imaginary worry in my view. And it will take real game time for all these players, especially those who have been out long term like Ox and Lukas, to regain their form. If this is pessimistic then so be it, but it is also reality as I see it.

we may never get to full strength, but i also think it's realistic to say that our injury situation shouldn't continue on the pace it has been. we can handle a few guys out at a time with our depth, particularly in MF now. what we can't handle is a long term injury to Giroud or Per/Kos. Probably more so Per.

i certainly agree with your assessment overall though. very positive signs, but realistically an injury or two at a light position, particularly if the injury occurred in Oct/Nov, would be really bad for us. if the team stays relatively healthy, we will certainly contend for a trophy this year. we will probably need to make a purchase or two in January, if one presents itself, for depth, if nothing else.

Look

I get the idea that soccer fans are cynical. It's a cultural thing in some ways. But goddammit damn we are sports fans. This type of talk reminds me of rantards saying "Dude don't overlook our opponent this week." Just enjoy the ride is what I'm saying. I'll hang up and listen.

How close is Diaby to coming back? If he's already back in training I would say that they pushed his rehab a bit too quick given his injury history.

nooooo. he just started walking without crutches in the past week or two. he isn't expected to rejoin training until like December.

had a random thought today while i should have been working: we should consider moving Gnabry to RB (RWB, would probably be more accurate) later this season or in the offseason

reasons for why i had this thought: the wing positions are a little clogged unless our top 4 on the depth chart out wide are injured (santi/theo, poldi/ox), he's strong as shite, has shown solid defensive play (for a winger, albeit), and it'd be cool to have a legitimately threatening attacker and one of the better crossers on our squad at RB. mainly, i was just day dreaming that he could be an Alaba-type on the right for us.

it will be interesting to see if he sticks around when people get healthy or if Arsene will loan him out in January.

If that's true then that timetable doesn't make much sense. He probably was off crutches shorty after his surgery to repair his ACL. That only takes about a month.

Eh, I'm just going by history. We've had 7 years of consistent bad luck with injuries. This year we've already been tremendously unlucky. We are also less than 10 games into the season. Again, we've had purple patches of form when we were terrible. In 2008 we didn't lose a league game from November of that year to May of 2009. Yet we were a shite team. We weren't particularly great last March when we started this run, but we've gotten results despite that. This year we actually look dynamic, but we need injury luck in order to compete. We have a little more leeway this year as City, Chelsea, and Man U have new coaches who need an adjustment period. If we can get through this October looking as good as we have in September, then I think we have a good chance of being in good shape after the winter, where we historically have struggled.

Ha, I am. This team is tremendously fun to watch, especially in comparison to the beginning of last year. But's the first week of October.

maybe i was mistaken then. maybe he just started running recently. he was rehabbing in France until just a couple of weeks ago. Christmas time is the timetable they gave for his return recently.

You can start running a few months after an ACL repair. It's cutting that is an issue. Even professional athletes have a time table of at least 6 months for ACL repairs, and they are getting rehabbed pretty hard core, every day. My doc told me 9 months to a year for my tear.

Christmas would be a little over nine months. they must've taken their time because he didn't get off crutches until May/early June. I think they're treating him very cautiously.

Peterson is a freak.

He came back and faced NFL defenses after only 8 months ans still smoked them.

For the record, it's cutting that takes the longest time. That's why you can run a few months after but can't go back to sports like soccer til much later.

We need to get our shite together in defense.

Sami Khedira thinks that Ozil makes us the best team in England.
LINK
quote:

“Arsenal had a strong team anyway, but Mesut makes them the best team in England. I am sure he can be the player that makes things happen for them and win them the championship. Mesut is a genius on the field, there is no other way to describe him.

quote:

Matt Law in the Sunday Mirror hints at an Arsenal move for Khedira, “Khedira will have 18 months remaining on his contract in the January window and the opportunity to reunite Ozil with his old colleague has not been lost on the Arsenal hierarchy.”

No idea who Matt Law is but that doesn't stop me from fapping to the idea of this.

ETA: Ozil Gunners Porn
I just came. Twice.

those quotes definitely make it seem like he would like to join us. that said, Bender's release clause activates after the season apparently. Bayern made a bid for him too. would imagine we'll revisit our interest in him in the summer.
