WBRZ - Glassdoor
Posted by Will Cover on 6/19/13 at 1:47 pm00
Couldn't locate anything on Glassdoor for one of Baton Rouge's local television station.
However, a Sales Manager position is now listed. Don't know anything "internally" about WBRZ.
Anyone have any first hand knowledge regarding company culture, benefits, pay, promotions, etc. that you'd be willing to share?

Pay, promotions, and benefits all depend on what kind of bj you give Pat Shingleton.
The culture is that of sexual harrasment by Pat Shingleton.

I'd like to believe that I am not his type.

If the amount of turnover from their on air staff is any indication, I'd probably run and run fast.

Where have you heard/seen this? Are you talking about the newscasters, reporters, etc.?
Sorry, I haven't lived in BR for a few years so I'm just curious

It's owned by the Manships. That should tell you all you need to know.

It's a small-medium size market. If you can get a job going from the 95th size market to the 50th, you take it.

Media sales and management are revolving door positions. I have known a few who have made a couple of hundred grand a year doing it, but that was before the large corporations like Cumulus and Belo got involved.

What sales position isn't revolving door? To me they're all revolving door positions.

I work for a company that has a 1.8 review rating on Glassdoor, has 60 % turnover within the first 6 months and currently has a class action lawsuit filed against it (in California) by 1300 employees that have come and gone within a 2 year window.
I know all about turnover and revolving doors.

I've done a great job at being "flexible," "adaptable" and realizing the only thing that is constant is "change."
The running joke at my company is that 1 year at my company is equal to 7 years anywhere else, similar to dog years.

For my company, it should be called "Out the door."
Believe it or not, there is a former employee that started his own blog and it has grown to epic proportions where employees and former employees express their true feelings about my company.
Makes for some good reading. Also, I do know for a fact that the 1.8 rating on Glassdoor is somewhat fabricated as our Recruiting Department has asked certain employees for positive reviews to help stop the bleeding.

There are parts that are great like being able to truly help a family in a time of need and provide a much better solution than left with them to do it on their own. Working with my immediate supervisor and co-worker. Vacation or sick time is never tracked. Expenses are always paid for by company card. And earning potential.
The downside? Work 6 days a week, each and every week. Roughly 60 to 70 hours total per week. Travel every week of the month except one. No exaggeration, at least 20 conference calls per week, not counting the constant and on-going pressure from top level executives to micro-manage the shite out of employees on an hourly basis. There's micro-management and then there is our style of micro-management. There is literally a report to tell you how many times a person uses the bathroom in a given work day.
Plus, my bonus plan is now changing for the 8th time in less than 4 years and it's never for the better as it ways benefits the company more so than the employee. Bonus used to be exceptional which made up for base pay that is lacking vs. competition, but not anymore. Put it this way. There are 56 people that do what I do for my company (over 10K employees). I am 1 of 6 people that are scheduled to make a bonus this quarter and right now, even that is in jeopardy. A bonus plan is supposed to be motivating, but it's having the reverse effect when over 90 % of the people doing my position aren't going to make money this quarter and for the rest of the year.
Factor all of this in with no work-life balance and a concerned wife and here I am. It also doesn't help that when I come home from being out of town to hear my oldest child say, "Daddy, when are you going out of town again?" right when I walk in the door.

Well you should be good
It sounds like a step up in stability from where you are at. Sales is mofo but it seems the true heavy commission jobs are a thing of the past.
