For the sake of accurate comparison, both will be presented in 9mm because they don't both come in .45. The sheild comes in .40 while the XDS comes in .45

Springfield XDS specs:
Length-6.3"
Height-4.4"
Barrel-3.3"
Capacity-7+1
Weight-23 oz with flush fiting magazine

Smith and Wesson M&P Shield:
Length-6.1"
Height-4.6"
Barrel-3.1"
Capacity-7+1
Weight-19 oz unloaded (couldn't find weight with magazine)

Which one would you use for every day carry, and why?

The one that I can shoot the best and feels the best in my hand. I'm not going to let 4 ounces of weight, or specs with no differences more than .2 of a inch in any dimension sway my decision.

That being said, I picked the Beretta Nano

XD-S in .45 ACP. I like knowing I have the knockdown power of a .45 with the compact size. With the extended mag it fits great but even witht teh standard flush its not bad. People bitch their pinky hangs off the bottom and this is why you go to the range and get familiar with your weapons and try different grips on the pistol

knockdown power

quote:

Ever since Dirty Harry came along with his .44 Magnum hand-cannon, when someone gets shot in the movies or on TV (and don’t forget video games) two things happen: 1) the victim is thrown back convulsively, through windows, off balconies, etc. and 2) there will immediately emerge a geyser of blood spewing forth from the wound, leaving no doubt that this person has been shot, and pinpointing exactly where the bullet has struck.

quote:

A bullet simply cannot knock a man down. If it had the energy to do so, then equal energy would be applied against the shooter and he too would be knocked down. This is simple physics, and has been known for hundreds of years. The amount of energy deposited in the body by a bullet is approximately equivalent to being hit with a baseball. Tissue damage is the only physical link to incapacitation within the desired time frame, i.e., instantaneously.

so, should we start the 9mm vs .45 debate again...

quote:

the “stopping power” of a 9mm bullet at muzzle velocity is equal to a one-pound weight being dropped from the height of six feet. A .45 ACP (45 auto) bullet impact would equal that same object dropped from 11.4 feet.

buy a compact pistol instead of a subcompact. Who wants to go to the range and shoot a gun that makes you look like you're sipping tea when you hold it?

What you gain in comfortability you lose in concealability

It isn't a range gun

If practice makes perfect then the smallest gun I want to carry is one that I will feel comfortable practicing with. I understand seasoned shooters can handle the sub well, I just doubt everyone falls into that category.

The feel of compact while shooting verses the feel of subcompact while wearing comes down to what you are more sensitive to. I could get used to wearing an inch longer, 3/4" taller, 1/2" wider gun before I could used to practicing with a two finger grip. All day for me, though I don't carry yet because I don't feel comfortable enough with my LEM pistol. I have to put a ton more lead downrange before I pull this out in public.

Conversely, if you don't carry the gun because it's too big it doesn't do any good.

Although all these fools on this board who talk about packing heat in running shorts crack me up. Never heard of anyone getting mugged for their New Balance 990's.
