What a disappointment Donald Young turned out to be.

Was it Kudla who lost to Tsonga in the semi's the other day? Kid has a lot of game, Jo-Wily did not think he was going to be in for that much.

He's actually gotta lot of game. I've seen him play live. It's all in his head.

Small guy (relatively, obviously) but he got out there and did his thing. I believe the commentators said he was only 20?

Yup, he's only 20. Reminds me a lot of Hewitt. Scrappy little fella.

Kudla won. Williams won. Tim Smyczek won. Alex Kuznetsov won. Bobby Reynolds won. And I think that's all the Americans.

There are only three rounds in qualies. So whoever of the above wins their next match is in the main draw.

Williams plays Reynolds. The only time they've previously played was in the 2012 Australian Open Wild Card Tournament (basically, the australian open gives the USTA a wildcard (the US Open returns the favor), and so the USTA puts on a tournament to see who gets it). Williams won that match, but it was a tight three setter. some highlights with really shoddy camera work.

Williams will be favored to win tomorrow, and I think he will win.

Kudla plays a dude from Belgium. Kudla will definitely win. Dude has been playing out of his mind lately.

I've never heard of the guys Smyczek and Kuznetsov are playing against, but I like their chances -- their scorelines indicate that they're both playing well.

Junior Ore (aTm), Mitchel Frank (UVa) and Kudla all trained together as juniors in Maryland. Kudla skipped college and after a year or two on the tour, seems to be hitting his stride. Kudla did beat Ryan Harrison in a challenger about a month/two months ago. Very promising future.

I know its a different threat, but I believe Steve Johnson got a WC into the main draw.

Yeah, he won the Nottingham Challenger, and got a WC as a result. Sweet deal, really.

Kudla is actually from Arlington, VA -- which is actually where I live -- but he trained up at the tennis academy in College Park, Maryland where a lot of those guys train. He was ranked #3 in the world as a junior, so it made sense that he skipped college. He certainly does have a promising future, and it is awesome to see his game finally start to come together.

I could always just make this the Wimbledon thread, but then it's gonna get buried after qualies ends but before play in the main draw starts, and somebody else will probably start a Wimby thread in the meantime.

Unless they wanna sticky this one!

I would just make this the thread. The draw should be out by end of the week and that may keep this from being buried.

Looks like Venus is now out due to back injury.

I think there should be more time between the French Open and Wimbledon and they should add a grass-court Master's 1000 tourney to make an actual grass season.

Just seems crazy that the surface of the most prestigious tourney only has a couple of low-level warm up events.

They play best out of 5 sets in the last round of qualies. I just learned this.

You're not the only one who feels this way. Wimbledon could move the date forward a few weeks. Not sure why they don't.

Williams must have grown up a bit since college. Bastard was a nut on and off the court.

He's still a bit of a nut on the court, but getting a little better at keeping that in check.

I've never met him personally. Was he pretty crazy at UT?
