What are your thoughts on the fate of GameStop in this next generation of game consoles?

I personally think that they will be successful through Q1 of 2014 from console sales, but then will begin the slow or possibly precipitous decline into bankruptcy.

They've already been struggling, but they'll probably be ok especially if a large number of Xbox users move to ps4. I believe a large portion of their sales is used games, so they'll lose some there on xbox1.

Be awhile like KK said but they'll eventually go under.

PS3/360 will still have enough movement for a few years, and the PS4.

yup.

they might survive this gen, but it's only matter of time. not if

Most PC sales are digital.
There are already tons of titles available for digital download on consoles.

Only as matter of time before you can rent and buy digitally. Why drive and pick up physical copies when you can have it at home instantly?

They will either adapt or die. I'm surprised GameStop didn't take up fixing the red ring/yellow light of death....

i consider this a misconception. You can only get it as fast as your internet connection allows. Thats why i do the console thing. Instant gratification. I can drive to town, make my purchase, and drive home, open the case, insert disk, d/l and install updates faster than it takes most to download a 4+GB game.

your Internet sux ?

what's likely to improve in the near future?

Internet bandwidth or speed limits / the distance to GameStop?

10 years ago no one would even consider the notion of downloading a video game. now there are endless d/l titles.

so someone must be d/l'ing games

so you're idea of a misconception is a misconception. because you missed the part where I said 5-8 years

I do hate the lack of 802.11ac in the next gen consoles, but maybe they can put that in the other models down the road as it becomes the standard.

Regardless, downloading a 20GB game at 10Mbps = 4 and half hours.

10GB game = 2 and a half hours.

Quite a wait, and what is the average internet speed in the USA? Probably 3-4Mbps?

I disagree but they will not exist in their current capacity. They will have to restructure their whole business model which I think they are aware of and are already doing.

Used games accounted for 30% of Gamestops revenue last year. That's a big chunk to lose if things do go to an all digital distribution method but they already have implemented a digital service for PC games and I see no reason this will not happen for consoles. They will still be in the gaming retail business in that sense.

They are also shifting focus to diversify more. They have added tons of products they used to not have (some of those items are specialty hard to find stuff like ThinkGeek.com), they are selling some PC components now, they purchased Kongregate, started BuyMyTronics.com, and they have moved heavily into the used phone and tablet market now which is a very profitable business.

Will you have physical Gamestop locations in the future? Nope but you will still be able to shop at Gamestop and it wouldn't shock me at all to see them enter the digital rental market as well when/if that becomes a thing.

stop thinking now and think 5-6 years from now. because that's what Sony and Microsoft are thinking.

maybe not this gen, but next gen it's gonna happen.

Steam downloads are done in a torrent style and it doesn't take near this long for me on anything that size with my 10Mbps speed.

You are also forgetting that you will not have to DL whole games as some of it can be played directly in the cloud.

Yeah but we're talking consoles.

I know on the PS3 when you run a speed test, my 16Mbps is displayed as 8Mbps, half the speed through the PS3, hardwired with a custom IP and DMZ to open all the ports with Google DNS. Before doing that I was at about 4Mbps.

Could be a hardware limitation, hopefully I can get at least 12Mbps on the PS4.

No clue how download will work on the next gen, I'd guess the same as now which like I posted, you're looking 2 and half to 4 and a half hours for a 10GB or 20GB game download at 10Mbps.

But yes, you can download hte single play or multiplayer first and play as it downloads, so that is a huge help assuming it doesn't lag the shite out of your internet trying to play online while downloading a large file.

I dont have much experience with steam so i could be wrong. But when i was downloading the updates for BF3 on pc, it would take over 8 hours to d/l them all. Prolly longer. But thats origin.

No way MS is going to limit you to a direct download from one server when they have 300K servers to use.

I know you will only DL as fast as your speed allows but torrent style helps that to a degree because there will be less fluctuating of the speeds if you are connected to multiple file host.

It gives you the potential to have a consitent 12MB DL speed if that's what your ISP provides you.
